Americans are Loud

Post by Lon »

I gotta pick on my fellow countrymen and women, but we are loud. We talk loud compared to people in other parts of the world. Most times, you can hear the American Tourist before you see him. When in a foreign country, the locals will never be as impolite to tell a tourist that, but among themselves they sure talk about it. Same with clothing, they can spot American Tourists a mile away. Too much jewelery, white tennis shoes etc. I don't know why it is that we talk louder, but we do.

:wah: Hey Lon, 'Have a nice day!'

That's what made me lol, every shop I went in, when I left they said, 'have a nice day'. Is that the law or something there? It sounds so ungenuine when they all say it. :wah:

Hmm. Ever seen a group of Asians? Or Filipinos? Or the French?

Now *that's* loud. How about Mexicans? Loud and screeching.

I've heard this before about Americans but I can't say yay or nay as I'm in the eye of the hurricane myself; but my general feeling is we're probably no louder than the next people.

Clothes...if you mean the men in black socks and wingtips, shorts and plaid shirts, I'll go with that. Or the women with rhinestones glued on all fingernails, I'll go with that too. And I hate those ubiquitous waist pouches. That's like "Instant Tourist."

Stereotypes are funny though. Like the proverbial Asian with 13 cameras around their neck. I've only seen as many as three at once, myself. ;)

How do you feel Americans are on politeness?

I've seen some danged rude foreign tourists here and I've seen Americans be rude in our own country. I doubt anyone has a monopoly on manners though.

I just never got most of the whole Monty Python thing. I was always more an SNL type. I remember in school everyone would be all about MP and I would never understand what was funny about it. Sorry Magenta. It's not you. :)

Actually if you ever want to go to an extremely beautiful place New Zealand is the go! it's kind of Tahiti mixed with a cold climate.

I know I was joking, didn't they film Lord of the Rings there? Beautiful country.

New Zealand is about to win the "America's Cup", then there's "All Blacks", "Lord of the Rings", "World's Fastest Indian", "Hokey Pokey Ice Cream", and a whole slew of good stuff from a wee country of only 4 million. One million living outside the country at any given time.

It sure was. I don't care for movies much, but every now and then one will strike me and that one did.

I loved the Maori stuff. I find those people incredibly interesting.

Ever read "The Thorn Birds?" That took place in NZ. The movie I don't know about, but the book was great. Sorry that was a little off topic.

OH, I didn't mean all Americans. Mostly Zinky. :wah: j/k sweet thing

And you know what, no one is perfect anywhere. Really.

Well, except me. If everyone in the world was just like me, it would be a happy fun drunk place.

sorry off topic?

Thorn birds ....Colleen McCullich? yeah I remember the mini series but not who wrote the book "Devils advocate" was the next one I think?

Right, Colleen McCulloch. Never heard of Devil's Advocate but when I looked up her bibliography, I didn't find that one.

My own people embarrass me too sometimes. I was in Oklahoma and we had gone to some Indian thing and there were a couple of loudmouths in our group who had to comment on everything. I forget which nation the guy was representing, but the loudmouths insisted he was wrong because on TV they burn the dead Indians on a funeral pyre! It was in a John Wayne movie! He explained they only do that on TV and loudmouths insisted that wasn't so. They were white too which was all the more embarrassing because how the heck would they know?

They criticized their dancing and their outfits and just wouldn't shut the heck up. The rest of us were embarrassed by them. But there's at least one in everybody's crowd.

Yeah, I noticed that today when I looked up the book. It was mostly in Drogheda. But wasn't there a part in there somewhere about NZ? Good book anyway.

What is Ateaora?

Haven't you guys met any nice Americans? I can find a handful right now so I know we can't be that scarce.

Ateorua (or some reasonably close facsimile of the spelling) is the Maori name for New Zealand.

I haven't met any nice Americans lately but I have worked with a few (in America too!!)
