Americans and Voting
This is a real sore spot with me and a source of embarassment when abroad.
If the Americans on FG follow the U.S. as a whole, then a certain percentage of those eligible to Register to Vote actually are registered. Of those actually registered, not more than 50% bother to vote. YOU GET WHAT YOU DON'T VOTE FOR.

This is your third thread about Americans tonight.
Do you need a vacation over-seas? Away from us?

Why did I know that my posts would get under some ones skins. Hey, if we can't critique ourselves we'uns got a problem. I just got back from 5 months in New Zealand.

Would you like us to vote on our food, manners and volume of our voices too??
I didn't vote until I was in my mid 20's...I won't say who was elected president to make me want to vote...but I felt very strongly against that person and still do...and have voted ever since. I've taught my boys to care about their Country and to vote...You have a point when you said "YOU GET WHAT YOU DON'T VOTE FOR" or you get what you don't want even when you DO vote...Human nature seems to never be happy with what we have....and we as Americans are very blessed!:-4

I wouldn't say it was one post in particular.
Like I said, this is your third.
If you are this negative about America, how do you expect things to change here? And brining a negative attitude about your own people to this extreme to the board really sends a negative message.
Just my opinion.

I remember this topic coming up a while back and K Snyder and I both said the same thing: some of those registered voters are total morons who don't know jack all about what they're doing, don't study the issues or watch the candidates and so will vote stupidly.
I would rather they not vote than vote like a retard.
I didn't vote until Clinton's first election. I was apathetic and unpatriotic up until my mid 20s. Then I changed. When I decided to vote, I was on it like white on rice. I knew every issue inside out and I gave my attention to everyone running. I stood in line on crutches for three hours so I could get my vote in. I consider myself a sharp voter and I never miss an election.
While standing in line, I listen to the blarney coming out of everyone else's mouth and it amazes me how many of them are going to VOTE STUPIDLY. Either because they misunderstand an issue or because they always vote Republican because their last three grandfathers always did or what the hell ever. They have a right to vote, I just wish they wouldn't and I sure don't give them gold stars for showing up.

Why is discussing a few warts and pimples negative. Maybe I can just **** off someone that could have and should have voted and didn't, to vote next time around. Sticking ones head in the sand and acting like the U.S. doesn't have a few blemishes is unrealistic and counterproductive, but appreciate your opinion.

I just get tired of everyone complaining about America all the time. Obviously we have our issues. Name a country that is perfect? It would just be nice to hear something positive every now and then.

Magenta, if you really fell for that, then the joke's on you. That's the funny part. We do have dumbasses like that for sure, but not one right after the other like that.
I used to have a Canadian friend who was always ragging on the states and she cited that same video. This after she told me how America is stupid because we believe everything we see on TV.

Agreed. Pi.
Until I got a computer I never knew America was held in such contempt and I had no idea the misconceptions other countries had about it. Sad really that they don't bother to learn.

Well, I knew America was disliked by many, but I just never really saw it hit so close to home I guess (as in so many people I know). Kind of disappointing really.

The biggest problem with voting in America is that there isn't a center anymore. I'm not a partisian, and don't like to vote along those lines. I won't vote republican again I don't imagine; but I doubt I go democrat either. I'm watching Obama real close though.

That's actually inaccurate. At least in my school days we did study other forms of government.
You are not educated in the ways and thoughts of other peoples and cultures.
Says who, Magenta? I've found quite a few people just on this forum with knowledge of other cultures and their ways. I associate with highly intelligent and compassionate people in my own town who are quite knowledgeable about other peoples and I enjoy learning from them. Perhaps I can't go across the world at present and learn firsthand but please don't assume we are a bunch of dumbasses who think America is the only continent on this planet. I have found this attitude prevalent among other countries and I'm sure someone will say there's truth in it, but personally I feel it only shows disdain for America, jealousy, pettiness and frankly, ignorance. This chest beating about other countries know everything about everyone and America only knows America is presumptuous and rather unattractive.
Do you relise why the philipinos hate you guys with a passion ? Do you even care?
No I do not know. No I do not really care either, but I'm certainly not averse to hearing the alleged reason.
Do you understand why fanatics can easily turn nations against you guys?
Yes. Because they generally have charismatic leaders who prey on the ignorance and gullibility of their citizens.
Everytime someone said anything negative about America they were called a 'commo' now it's a 'suporter of terrorists'.
I don't know that to be true or not. I have problems when Bush says stuff like this, but I don't hear it much from others. Can't recall anything, anyway.
I realise that you guys lost alot of people at nine 11 but do any of you realise why? Do you really think that Al quada is alone in their thoughts. Do I support terrorists? No absolutely not . Do I understand the attack to American soil? of course I do. You guys a going to have to step outside your box and learn that you guys can't go around the world dumping all manner of politcial social and military waste and then sit there and say "oh dear, why are so many upset with us?"
You've dumped on peoples and places for so long and now you are having to pay the price. Don't get me wrong, because our terrorist situation is very much closer to home here. Why ? because people don't like to be used as door mats.
Ok, here's where I call bulls.hit. I've heard this before and it's ignorant and exactly what "the enemy" wants you to think and conform to.
It is also a sheer show of disrespect to every individual who lost their life that day. A show of contempt. I won't accept that from anyone.
Don't mistake me for being red white and blue. I have cut down my country many times, and probably will again. If I thought for a moment that a mess of innocent people (and the security dog) deserved to die for anything we did I would say so. But I don't. The only reason that sh.it happened is because of hate, greed, ignorance, fanaticism and a thousand years of f.uckedupness in the name of religion among people who do not think for themselves. When you say this stuff to me, you are effectively saying that those people of my country "deserved it." Tell me you don't support terrorists and yada yada but your words belie your actuality.
I think that's one major difference between America and any other country.
If that crap had happened to your country, do you think we'd be blaming you?

And when you say the things you did you become exactly what you are railing against us Americans about. Lump us all together in one big pot and make some stew. That is a grand way to promote cultural cross learning. I understand the feeling and have said the same things myself, but you have to qualify. Declarative, broad sweeping, statements serve no good.

See what, Magenta? I knew you would come back with something like that if I didn't agree with you. I think a lot of the contempt for "the greatest country in the world" is simply because you all are tired of having your faces rubbed in it. Then do something about it. Take our crown. But don't you dare have the gall to tell me my country deserved to have its people blown to bits. This is still my home.

Those same people that decided to murder husbands, wives, sons, daughters, teachers, poliemen, firefighters, Christians, Muslims, Taoists, children and innocents; also manage to do the same to their own people on a regular basis and have been doing it for every era of Modern and Ancient history. I figure they did it becuase they don't have a clue what the Koran really says. They have that in common with folks here and abroad that refuse to admit there is a New Testement. Evil is evil, and it will prevail in a world where it is "understood" and shrugged off.

I see the word "deserved" used once, and that was meant to convey a feeling not a entitlement of blame. I used neither word myself. You said you understood the reasons why they did it, then mentioned a door mat. If that alone is a good enough reason to slaughter non combatants, civilians, and children then share with us how to understand that.

I watch the Democratic & Republican Debates - which I found interesting.
I ask - How many watch the Debates? Not many
You can't complain - is your not involved - everyone should be interested where the candidates stand - their views for our Country.

Well...when you tell me you understand something that is inherently evil, I have to wonder about you.
To me it's about the same as "understanding" John Wayne Gacy. Or Hitler. Or Stalin. Or any number of fanatical crackpots.
While I can understand and appreciate something I don't support (for instance, prolifers who kill abortionists) in some instances, 9/11 is not one of them.
Maybe if they had come to your home, you would better understand my feeling about it.
I don't see the difference you speak of.
It's not just with you, Magenta. I've heard this same stuff from others and it sets me on edge with them too.

sorry but I'm seeing red white and blue here and it's not from my flag.
Jealousy? of what? what could I possibly jealous of? please send me a list! I demand a list of what I should be jealous of.
"Ignorance and gullibility of their citizens"? .................................Can you hear yourself?
"No I do not really care either," ...............OMG!
"alleged"...................................................? Start looking at the hard facts about your government and it's dealings with the rest of the world, I reckon I could ramble off a whole lot of different countrys and you wouldn't even know where they were. But your country has dealings there including my own. Pine Gap for instance do you know we are a nuclear target because of that very fact?
I think you need a lot of growing up.
try joining Amnesty International and greenpeace............. You carry on about animals but you have no realization about human beings.
I see after I said my piece you went back and edited this post. How fitting.
You think I have some growing up to do? I hope I do! I don't really know anyone who doesn't.
You don't like my holier than thou American attitude?
You still think this Dumb American doesn't know other countries exist and where?
You think I consider my government to be without fault?
Work on your own attitude, Magenta. You are a political snob. I know we rarely ever agree on things but you're using fighting words with me and I'm getting p.issed.
You repeatedly insult my home. You insult me and the people I live amongst. When is the last time you EVER heard me say anything untoward about where YOU live? And don't flatter yourself by thinking that it's because we think things are all glory in Kiwi Land.
I think you need to cut the hardline attitude and check yourself. Try having a real discussion without the unnecessary slags, regardless of what you may think of us. Other people are able to, there's no reason why you can't.
As far as me joining Amnesty or Greenpeace, I don't care for Amnesty Internat'l and I have been a Greenpeace member for years. Perhaps if you had asked me instead of making another one of your assumptions, you would have known that.
I resent your insult about what I do for animals and you have no clue what I do for humans, so you're speaking out of turn again.
I expect better from you, Magenta. You took the easy way out.

A few facts to toss in amongst the BS:
from:
http://www.census.gov/prod/2006pubs/p20-556.pdf
In the presidential election of November 2004, the 64 percent of voting-age citi-zens who voted was higher than the 60 percent who turned out in 2000
The registration rate of the voting-age citizen population, 72 percent, was higher than the 70 percent registered inthe 2000 election.
The overall number ofpeople who voted in the November 2004election was 126 million, a record high for a presidential election year. Voter turnout increased by 15 million voters from the election in 2000. During this same 4-year period, the voting-agec itizen population increased by 11 million people.
Here are the facts: 6 out of 10 registered voters in the US voted in the last election and the % is an increase. The facts say most people in the US who can vote do vote at least in the presidential rates. People do tend to turn out less for off year elections, but LON's inital premise is balony. If you have a beef Lon maybe you should show some due diligence before posting your views.

Just for the record: I have missed exactly one voting opportunity since I became eligible. I always pop firecrackers on the 4th of July, and I always remove my beer hat when I hear the Star Spangled Banner and sometimes when I hear that Canadian theme song, mostly by accident though.

Voter turnout of the eligible population in 2005 was 77 percent. Voter participation in general elections declined sharply from 89 percent in 1984 to 78 percent in 1990, increased slightly to 81 percent in 1996, then declined again to a new low of 72.5 percent in 2002. In 2005 the turnout recovered to the level recorded in the 1999 election.
In 2005, New Zealand ranked eighth out of 30 OECD countries with a voter turnout rate, defined as the proportion of the registered population who voted, of 81 percent.68 The New Zealand rate was higher than the OECD median of 70 percent for recent elections, but lower than that of Australia, where voting is compulsory (92 percent in 2004). Countries with lower voter turnout rates than New Zealand included Canada (65 percent in 2006), the United Kingdom (62 percent in 2005), and the United States (60 percent in 2004).
New Zealand is not much better Lon.

Americans and Voting
I am American. I have registered to vote and I do vote. I listen to the candidates and what they have to say on various issues, but......
I am so tired of the political campaigning retoric that goes on every time. The candidates just say what they think we want to hear for the most part. Same ole...same ole.
And the financial cost of just campaigning in this country is outrageous. It seems that the richer you are, the better chance you have of getting on the election ticket. Also the candidates are financed by special interest groups also known as big business.
I would love to get excited about a presidential candidate, but, so far , I am not impressed.
I am just one of many Americans who go to work everday, pay taxes, pay bills, buy groceries and gasoline. We watch and listen to the news everday. We try to raise our families the best we can on what we earn and where we live. We are aware of many casualties from a war and do not really understand that mission we are supposed to reach "over there". Even with insurance, we are hesitant to go see a doctor because the final medical bill will be finacially overwhelming. We see so many babies being born and not enough concern for them as children and young adults. We see drugs and drug abuse everywhere. We see lack of respect for the elderly, especially if they are not rich.
Do they candidates really represent us? I don't think so.

It looked to me when I came back that you had added on a whole bunch more stuff. That's what I was referring to. Not a big deal now.
I don't live in New Zealand .
Got me! I knew that. I don't know why I was thinking yesterday that you did. I guess we talked about it too much and my mind was set on it.
I haven't insulted your work with animals
Well, you tell me I "carry on" about animals but haven't a clue about humans. To me that sounds like a double insult. Not everyone has to serve the needs of every cause. Nor should they. My first cause is animals and most people here do know this, whether they agree with it or not. I am proud of all I have done for animals during my life so far and comparing it to any other cause that I may or may not take part in, cheapens what I do. Also, I may not belong to official "human" orgs, but I do help on the homefront. I am a good neighbor, a good friend, a good family member and a worthy member of my community. I help people whenever I am able to and I do it in my own town. I believe that counts as having a clue about humanity.
SO you like myself, are a member of greenpeace when greenpeace brings anything up about the American installations in the Phillipines about poisoning the water ways and literlly killing off the non combatant inhabitants. DO you take notice? By the way did you know that the only organisation who is not monitored or regulated as to radiation poisoning, toxic waste and the dumping of chemicals is the US military?
Re: Greenpeace, I think they are a great org, and always have been. I don't take umbrage with them or with the other environmental orgs I am part of, if they speak out against America's wrongdoings, providing it's the truth. America is full of pollutant corporations and I am well aware of that. It is a natural fact so there is no offense to be taken.
Re: the US military, that does not surprise me at all. We have a lot of military people at FG and I like them so I'm not going to risk offending them, but if you know me, you know, I'm pretty much anti-government and I am not a big fan of the military. That's about all I can say to that without angering someone.
And may I ask why you are not a member of Amnesty?
I haven't been fond of some of their politics in years past. Although I could also say that about groups I am a member of, so the main reason is because it's not top priority on my list. It's unrealistic to think a person could support (at least financially) every cause or every org, so you go with the ones that mean the most to you. For you, maybe it's human rights and AI. For me, it's animal causes, environmental issues and literacy. That doesn't mean you don't care about animals and I don't care about humans. That's just what we choose to do.

If the Americans on FG follow the U.S. as a whole, then a certain percentage of those eligible to Register to Vote actually are registered. Of those actually registered, not more than 50% bother to vote. YOU GET WHAT YOU DON'T VOTE FOR.
Very true. Still you rarely get what you voted for either.
