Sparing a Woman's Life Before A Man's?

Post by RedGlitter »

You know how on the Titanic it was "women and children first?"

Was that fair then? Would it be fair now?

Are men somehow less than women?

Who decided men should sacrifice their lives for women they may not even know?

Is chivalry still in existence today?

And is it a necessary thing?

Is it a fair thing?

Chivalry is not dead. Only lost on ignorant selfish men.

Watch. I'll prove it.

Why should chivalry be dead? Give me a minute I'm going to reply to this using an actual word program, need a smoke first though.

Scrat;636341 wrote: We're all equal right? Every man/woman for himself/herself. Kids would be the only exception I would make.

Chivalry is the west seems to be a tool used to flatter for mating purposes ect. I have noticed in Poland and the slavic states it can actually be taken for granted by women without expectations of any kind of recompense.

I would agree with that, Scrat, at least at first glance.

I'm just thinking of the male-female places in society and how it all pans out.

We're supposed to be equal human beings yet it's easy to fall into that male-female role playing thing.

We would give up our place on the lifeboat for a child because a child emcompasses all that's good and true and innocent, not to mention the future, while we the adults have already had a shot at life.

So if a man acquiesces to a woman, does he do it because she is lesser than he is? Not as substantial?

Only a moron of a man would do it for that reason, quite the contrary actually. I'll reply with a long winded post full of yada yada in an hour or so.

**edit**

I changed my mind, I'll just leave it with the two above statements.

Hey, are you sure? I was looking forward to reading your take in depth.

I know what I'm trying to say regarding the issue but the words aren't forming too well tonight.

Don't think I am beating you down by saying what I am saying. It comes out that way sometimes, but is far from the truth. I'll just write a story sometime. I'm not feeling it tonite.

Oh no problem, KB! I didn't think that at all. I didn't mean to seem pushy either, if I did; I just enjoy your writing very much.

I would say It's everyone for themselves in our modern selfish cultures with occasional pockets of chivalry dotted about. These days Women and Children First is more likely to apply to the Van Halen back catalogue.

I think the men were just trying to cop a feel as they loaded them in the life rafts then all of the sudden there was no room left.

I don't see it as women being 'lesser' somehow than men but perhaps the men....being stronger and could handle a lot more physically then a women could?? did that make sense? :o

as for chivalry, I love when a guy holds the door for me or does other courteous manly things for me....:D :-4

but I will do things like that for strangers too, like a hold a door for someone or whatever......

An old friend of mine, who I almost married. we talk about things like this a lot. Here was her response. This is the same woman who wrote the story about me I posted over in the Writing section.

"That whole chivalry thing...I don't even know where to start. I looked up the definition, and it didn't help me. I will say this: the same women that want to be seen as equals(I don't even think like that, why is it a question anymore?) are either the ones that have a problem, or are the first people to get offended when a guy walks right past them and goes into a door without even holding it for them to come in behind them. Do you understand what I'm saying? I don't expect someone to open doors for me. We both know I'm capable, but once when I was in college, I went on a date with this guy. His dad, apparently, had taught him that the man was supposed to walk on the sidewalk closest to traffic. It wasn't necessary, but it was still nice. Honestly, I don't think its a real debate anymore, more than it is a way for people to question what you think about it. Courtesy is the word I would use. Courtesy is just the way that people should treat others, regardless of sex, age or anything else that makes them different. I will open the door at the gas station for a person if they are close enough behind me. What do you think the real question is?"

Good to have someone like that to talk to, no matter how many times you play a Marshall Tucker band song because of it.

Scrat;636467 wrote: I don't think so, it's simply being a gentleman a kind of social courtesy. It also depends on the situation too and it depends on the people involved also.

Here in America I seldom see it and when I do it strikes me as a very insincere act, much like a cashier at a major store being nice and polite "how was your day" blah blah. I often will hold the door for someone but I tend to do it more out of common courtesy irregardless of sex.

Like the cashier in the store, does the act of chivalry have meaning anymore?

Does any act of courtesy in a place where the people are so self involved really have meaning anymore?

I could say the same thing regarding the exact opposite...
