Last night's rain

Post by spot »

I opened the back door with my lad and we stood and watched it for a while. It was like a waterfall.

The pic's off the BBC news site at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/6221152.stm and it was taken eight miles west of here. There's similar scenes from around the South of England and the Midlands.

I went to pick my daughter up from school in the worst of it here - even with my wipers going at full speed I couldn't see much at all, then when the thunder was right overhead I just parked up and stayed put - not scared but no-way was I getting out of that car!!

We missed it all. There was a storm that tried to start about dinner time, which we only had the very edge of it and it went. Was lovely and warm after that. Even at nearly midnight when I was walking home.

If the weather centre's right, that was just the taster. There's four inches of rain headed your way tomorrow with a gale pushing it. Refill the sandbags.

Looks like you got it bad last night, there are floods all over the north of England today, looks pretty terrible. We escaped almost all of that in Ireland, we were very lucky.

It's flooding here too. Right over in drought ridden Oz. We've still got stage 4 water restrictions which are fun while we bail and splosh and dance in the mud.

This is London. Today. In July, you'll notice. That's ice on a flooded street.

Here's the storm that brought it. The BBC doesn't retouch photos.

Today's excesses can be seen at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/6908187.stm

Two days ago we had http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/6905617.stm and http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/6908531.stm is today in London (Victoria and Croydon, mostly). We don't often have a year with so much damage.

Matters worsen. You'll find this next bit rather hard to believe.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6913752.stm

We now have 140,000 homes whose water supply is shut off, Pumping out the flooded water system will take at least the next week and probably two. Bottled water and tankers are being driven in for at least that long.

This is all about 40 miles north of where I'm typing. Water levels are still rising in some places.

Spot this is bloody awful. I am sorry you all are having such horrific weather. I wish I could send our hot weather your way to offer up some relief.

Apparently here to the west in British Columbia they are under a deluge and cool temps as well.

I now see I should NOT bitch about our weather here.

Only by banning the construction of houses in flood plains. What baffles me is that not only do these houses get built where you can guarantee a flood is going to happen now and then, but idiots buy them because they like the view. There's a whole bunch of new housing gone up along the Avon between Bath and Bristol which stand no chance of staying dry for whole of the next fifty years, they're selling like hot cakes.

You want to hear what happened 800 miles away? Just to show how mixed up things are getting?Up to 500 people have died in the past week from a heatwave in Hungary, a top health official has said.

[...] South-Eastern Europe is reeling from the hot weather, which has been blamed for widespread forest fires and has also caused economic hardship. Forest fires have raged across Greece amid soaring temperatures In Serbia, the agriculture ministry says 30% of the country's annual harvest has been destroyed because of the heat, with the wheat, soya and vegetable crops worst hit.

yep just as crazy here, we have campfire bans here around the city, and about 2 hours south, yet you head west by about 2 hours and they have relentless rain at the top of the Rogers Pass.

Its a little frightening.....

Its a little frightening.....It's the most wonderful scenery I've ever seen though. Anywhere. What's the best month to take a pushbike from your place to the West coast? Did I really need to say which coast, thinking about it... no, not really.

"the coast" around here implies west coast tis ok. I got it.... yes the scenery from here to "the coast" is stunning, and what is amazing, try hitting the same trek all 4 seasons, you would be amazed at the changes. Granted fall can be a little barren.

You should come back for a visit again some day.

I hope everyone stays safe during this horrible flooding, fast moving water is a dangerous thing don't wait to long to get to higher ground.

Is everyone reporting in Spot and letting you know how they are?? Wish I could send you our beautiful sunny San Diego weather its 83 degrees at 8pm on this Friday the 27th of July.

Be safe everyone, I will keep you in my prayers that this rain and flooding will stop soon.:-6
