Servers are always experiencing overloads, the traffic keeps increasing, could the net ever go 'BOOM' & its gone?

Not by accident and not by increased traffic either. There's more potential data capacity in a single optic fibre strand than the entire planet's using at the moment.

Deliberately bringing down the Internet is definitely achievable though, it's vulnerable to intentional attacks on the routing mechanisms. There's not a large number of models of routing system, they're easily mapped, recognised and targetted. Bringing the Internet back to life after an attack of that sort is simple enough, but putting it down at a given time can't be prevented if some group decides to go for it.
