New Zealand Doesn't Like Your Kid's Name

Post by RedGlitter »

This would tick me off. Where does anyone get off deciding what you can name your child? It reminds me of that American guy who legally changed his name to "Trout Fishing in America" because he liked the book so much.

Pat and Sheena Wheaton said they decided to name their new baby "4real" shortly after having an ultrasound and being struck by the reality of his impending arrival.

"For most of us, when we try to figure out what our names mean, we have to look it up in a babies book and ... there's no direct link between the meaning and the name," Pat Wheaton told TV One on Wednesday. "With this name, everyone knows what it means."

But when the parents filed the name with New Zealand's Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, they were told names beginning with a number were against the rules.

The government office has opened negotiations with the parents about the name under a policy that says all unusual names must be given case-by-case consideration.

"The name has not at this stage been rejected," Registrar-General Brian Clarke said in a statement Thursday. "We are currently in discussions with the parents ... to clarify the situation."

Clarke said the rules are designed to prevent names that are "likely to cause offense to a reasonable person." Satan and Adolf Hitler were proposed names that have been declined, he said.

If no compromise has been reached by July 9, the baby will be registered as "real," officials say.

New Zealand law requires all children born in the South Pacific nation to be registered with the Births, Deaths and Marriages registry within two months of birth.

N.Z. couple can't name their son '4real'

1 hour, 58 minutes ago

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - New Zealand authorities have blocked a couple's bid to officially name their new son "4real," saying numerals are not allowed.

The real problem with using a number instead of a letter could have to do with electronic scanners reading everything from passports to credit cards and screwing up data.

I alway liked River, as in River Phoenix.

It's probably a good job I don't have children, they'd all be called names from Harry Potter or LOTR!!!!

You can just imagine it...

That was a Seinfeld episode.

George Costanza wanted to name his first born "Seven", because it was Mickey Mantle's number.

When Susan's cousin wanted to use it, he protested, and offered her "Soda" as a replacement.

no, they're singers. Not sure of the exact spelling of they're names: Andre 3000 and Eryka Badu.

I can distinguish between fiction and reality........;)

here:

Badu has a son named Seven (b. 1997) with ex-boyfriend André 3000 of OutKast fame. On July 5, 2004, Badu gave birth to a daughter, Puma, in her Dallas home; the father is the hip-hop MC known as The D.O.C..[1]

Badu also serves as an activist in south Dallas where she grew up. Her charity organization, Beautiful Love Incorporated Non Profit Development (B.L.I.N.D.) provides community-driven development for inner-city youth through music, dance, theater and visual arts.

Hey now. You probably would have made a cool Elvis. Except you'd have to put up with all those "Elvis has left the building" jokes every time you went anywhere.

Fifi Trixibelle, Pixie, Peaches, Heavenly Tigerlily, Apple - some of these names could almost be considered as child abuse. 4Real pales in comparison to the load these kids must carry in the school playground.

I nearly quoted Sage Moonblood, but thought that might be Native American and offend, if I thought it odd. Grin. It is a bit way out there, though.

We should invent some proper Aussie names. I mean that arent nicknames like Blue, Paddo, Smithicles, Ginger Megs etc

Maybe Damper Smith, Coolabah Tree Jones, Billabong Jackson, Sulphur Crested Cockatoo Little, Daood Kangaroo Supur, Sydney Harbour Bridge Chan. etc...

Someone has to stop the madness!!

Had a guy come to jail the other day with a middle name of Orange. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you my favorite name of all times, privacy crap and all that. Let's just say when I had to say the name on the air, I was ribbed for days! Kissing sounds and people asking if I really wanted them to do it.

Whatever happened to Bob and Mary and Debbie and Tim and. . . .well, you get my drift. I can't pronounce half the names I come across theses days.

I feel sorry for school teachers. How do they know how to pronounce them before school starts? :-3

I always planned to name my kids weird stuff...Ahuvela, Winnetka, Thrush, Durango...but nothing stupid (ok, judgement call, I know) like Demi Moore's kids Scout and Rumer. She didn't even spell Rumer right!!

My cousin's fourth daughter is named Riley Kay. Kay after our grandmother Katherine but Riley?? Isn't that what you'd name a dog? :-3

You used to be able to tell someone's sex by their name. Not anymore. Girls have more boys names than girls name now.

A kid called Thrush would probably get a hard time in Australia, RG. Thush er Down Under, is slang for a female complaint down under otherwhere known as 'candida albicans'. Grin.
