I am going to send in a story to a contest to The Writer, I'll link the details below. I have a week, which means I have three days really.

Help me pick a story
I am thinking of combining my two Muse stories, they are about 2400 words together so I would have to cut some out here and there. That or revise both of them and pick one or send both.
Life ain't linear.

I would revise one to get your word count right, and send it in. That way you have more time to polish the second one, to submit somewhere else.
Do you get any books to help you select publishers for submission? There are several out there.

Having books that help me pick publishers would require me to be proactive; I'm almost allergic to proactive.

Help me pick a story
It is a good thing to do if you want to be published alot. Yes, you have to send them out, and receive rejections at times. It just depends on your viewpoint. I write poetry, and am proactive, so I had 40 poems published last year in about 10 different print journals. It kind of is my hobby, besides blabbing on here.

What about writing a story from scratch, not using anything you've already written? That might mean more work, and I'm not sure how adverse you are to that at this point! But, it'd be a challenge, anyway. Or maybe not, since stories seem to just pour right out of you.
When I'm stuck trying to figure out a good story idea I start with a character development. It doesn't have to be crazy long, it can be quick and to the point. For example, I saw this picture of a woman in a photography magazine (god bless photography) and was instantly inspired by her. She was unusual and very lovely. She fascinated me. And suddenly I wanted to write a whole story around her. I had little fantasies of what she must be like, or more accurately, what I wanted her to be like. And it goes from there.
Whatever you choose to write, KB, will be amazing. I have all the confidence in that. Good luck!

Help me pick a story
I hope this fits here. I own this tiny but fat book and it's screaming with ideas. Whatever page you open to there's something that will be inspiring.

Dear KB
It used to be the name of a wireless (sorry RADIO - Koster Brand)
If you have a book ready for pubishing I came across "Trafford Publishing" but you need money to do it - not tooooo much! About £400 - Vanity publishing will cost you £2,000 at least.
They set your book up in soft or hard back, use your own cover design or design one for you.
They can profitably sell one book or 10,000 as they only print what is ordered.
They advertise your book on their website. You keep the copyright!
Some well known names are there and it beats going around the publishers - I believe J.K. Rowling had to go to forty - I might be wrong - before "Harry Potter" ONE was accepted.
Might be worth looking into.
Novelettes as well as full blown books are accepted.
God Bless You
randall.

Life is full of bumps - but then - if we had no valleys we would have no hills?
If we had no sad days we would have no happy ones?
Are you joyful?
Are you sad?
Are you weary?
Are you glad?
With apologies
"The sun goes up the sun goes down and the hands on the clock keep going around.
Your just getting up when its time to lie down.
Life gets weary.
Don't it."
There's another 110 verses - I think?
God bless All

Dear K.B. - randall here again - ain't he a nuisance????
Just found an address which might interest you and, perhaps, pay you.?
Look up "HELIUM BLOGS" on Google Search Engine.
They appear to take anything however small and, on the surface , offer to pay for it - or the winning one. I am not too sure about that.
Cheaper than "Trafford Publishing" anyway.
The best of luck to you.
God Bless

He is far from a nuisance, I actually have helium blogs bookmarked, but I am letting myself get far too many adjectives going and not enough verbs. I need to revise things a bit. You offer as much as you wish to good sir.
