Political correctness has gone too far or we are just scraping the surface of it?

Political correctness is a bane in our society now. IMO (<--- look! PC!)

There's a difference between being a crass insensitive jerk with people and then just speaking your mind, risking offending someone without malice.

My friend and I grew up in the 70s and 80s before PC rode in and we still talk the same way we did then. We still use the word "retarded" and we like it that way. It doesn't mean we poke fun at mentally slow individuals or anything like that but if we're around the wrong people, we will be corrected for not being PC. We hate PC. I personally am sick of everyone leading into or wrapping up what they want to say with a disclaimer so I and others won't be "offended."

I may get offended often. But guess what, I can. So go ahead and offend me. I'll let you know if it's something worth arguing about.

I get sick of people jumping on the PC band wagon, some of my favourite comedians wouldn't be allowed to have their sketches on tv, due to people reacting over the top!

Political correctness means, as best I understand it, parroting the party line whatever the party line is this week.

Applied to, for example, inclusive language or a refusal to employ racist perjorative expressions, the parallel is obvious. It implies that one is saying the thing because it's what one's told to say rather than because it's the right thing to do.

I think it's the right thing to do, on balance. I see few instances where it's a stupid step beyond reason. When I see such excess I dismiss it rather than parrot it in turn.

The question is, should mocking "political correctness" because it's fun to join in the mocking, and because it's possible to find idiocy on the edges of the concept, take precedence over what is essentially good manners?

Ya, it is way out of control. You need to watch everything you say and be so sensitive about everything. It is ridiculous; I miss the good old days when you could just tell someone to go f**k off and it be no big deal.:-5

I have always had good manners and would never say something directly at a person to hurt a person, but some things are funny, we are becoming scared to laugh incase someones feelings get hurt. When people make jokes about fat people I laugh (if it's funny) I don't sit there saying it's out of order.

I would say, Spot, that we had good manners before we had PC. Most of us were taught to avoid hurting people and to be considerate. Within reason. Due to the nature of the degrees of differences among peoples, it is impossible to avoid offending someone some of the time. I think that needs to be realized.

Ok, but Suzy do you also laugh at jokes about drunk Irishmen and Mexicans? It's still ok to laugh at fat people and rednecks for some reason but laugh at a racial joke and your butt's grass. I find this annoying because cultures and ethnicities are funny by their very nature.

One still can, Mike. That's not non-PC, that's what we call crude obscenity. Non-PC is to refer to a temporarily drunken oaf as a brain-dead spastic leper. The insult is to those who suffer from Hansen's disease, the developmentally disabled and the encephalographically challenged, not to the drunk.

Yes, political correctness is getting out of control, and the government is to blame more than anyone.

Let's take age discrimination. When the government approved this initiative, they meant to protect certain age groups from being discriminated in the work environment, but they didn't really think it through OR provide suitable guidelines.

In accordance to this new law, 18-30 holidays will have to cease, as they discriminate against the elderly, but more importantly companies like SAGA who offer the elderly discounted services, will no longer be able to discriminate against people UNDER 60, so their rates will have to go up and a lot of these services will disappear.

Most importantly I feel, one of the things they didn't consider, is that insisting on testing drivers over the age of 70 must also stop in accordance with this new law.....

But seriously, I'll get flamed for this but my friend I had mentioned, her late uncle was retarded. That's sad. But it doesn't keep her from cracking jokes about it.

I'm pretty well endowed and we joke about that all the time because when I sit down in a booth in a restaurant, Bert and Ernie end up a bit on the table.

The man I used to live with had spent time in prison. He was always making prison jokes, which were pretty funny but I was too afraid of offending him to laugh, even though he'd beg me to. "Terri, you gotta laugh about it!" But I wouldn't.

Half my family are rednecks and hillbillies and religious nutjobs. That right there is potent and don't think I'm above laughing about it.

I laugh at drunks, at racial jokes (unless they're ignorant or mean spirited) at blind people, at everyone pretty much. I also laugh at myself so it's not like I'm above this.

I laugh at anything I find funny, as long as someone isn't being cruel to someone then fair game. Life is boring without laughter and the way it's going we'll be complying to be PC correct, at the expense of one of the best things in our lives.

I think that's funny, Buttercup. I don't know how to make shine but some of my family does. What might surprise you is that some of those hillbillies I'm related to have college degrees and have traveled the world whereas I (hillbilly girl by proxy) have not spent more than two months in college and I've only been to Mexico. And yet I'm considered one of the smart ones. :yh_wink

Shine is as much a stereotype as it is a fact. And (IMO) that's the crux of most stereotypes anyway.

All the flavouring, if any, goes in after you've distilled the alcohol. I never understood why people try to flavour before distilling. If you have a low-efficiency still it might carry over some flavour but I'd much rather just catch the clean alcohol.

Bear in mind that you'll have a 95% alcohol and you want some sort of dilution before it's served. I bottled the high-proof spirit raw and added it to spiced fruit punch usually, aiming to serve it around 20%. If I wanted a drinkable spirit I let the flavouring stand in the raw alcohol for a week, strained it and poured in spring water aiming at 45%. Ginger with thyme and lemon rind was good, you can't get that in the shop.

I seen a programme recently about 2 guys travelling in the states & they said they had never had anything more potent than the moonshine they had from the hillbillies, 1000 times better than anything we can make here, wouldent mind trying that :sneaky:

It's quite easy really. The recipe is important, as is the process, but the worm is crucial.
