BCup, are you getting the traditional metal braces? They have a new thing in the U.S. that are clear braces. It costs about $5,000 U.S. dollars.
The dentist gives you multiple sets of upper and lower clear braces (they look like flexible rubberized pieces that cover your upper teeth and your lower teeth); each set is slightly different in order to straighten your teeth over time. They are designed to be worn about 20 hours per day, all the time except when eating. They are nearly invisible. Depending how much straightening you need, you can wear them for up to a year or so.
I'd love to do that, as my teeth have moved as I've gotten older. Too expensive for me, but I can dream, can't I? :-6 :p

Just the top cher, the small pieces that fix to the teeth are clear & have a silver wire going through them so not quite as bad as the traditional metal brace, turns out i dont actually get them until 23rd january, today was lots of x- rays to see how much progression in bone deterioration & the obvious gap had become, started off as a slight hairline gap & has moved enough to almost get the edge of my tongue in it now. Whole thing - fitting, 6 weekly tightening & applying a retainer behind the teeth to stop any future movement after removal of brace comes in at £1,150
Payable in full at time of fitting or in two instalments (6 monthly) or 10 instalments (over 10 months) I think thats about $600 but cant be sure, dont know what the rate is, seems like it would be cheaper for you to fly here, stay with me & get them done in scotland

My orthodontist said the majority of his patients are over 40 chonsi. Do you have to avoid red wine & similar for staining?

Are they white wire, kind of like how BCup is getting them? Do they hurt? How long will you have to wear them in total? Would you mind telling me how much they cost?
That's it for the questions! :p

Everything is white, white enamel braces, upper and lowers, about $4,000 with no insurance coverage.
Mine was kind of a big thing to do, so I only got the uppers until the ortho saw it would work. I just got the lwoers last month.
I would go to Scotland like Buttercup suggest!:wah:
I have 3 more payments, then my son is getting his. But I think since he is 19, he can have silver, unless he chips in with the moola...............

How long will you have them on? Have you ever heard of the clear braces (kind of like a soft night guard that people wear at night for teeth grinding) that I described above? It seems they cost about $1,000 more than what you have, but really do look invisible (you can see them when the light hits them *just* the right way!) :-6

The tops-it will be a year in March. So I am thinking, maybe one more year to go. My teeth moved more slowly then the ortho thought, I am old..................:wah:
But she is a genius, she fixed the uppers, they are almost done. Everyone had said it couldn't be done.

Wow, white enamel ones Chonsi? Cool. I've never seen those. I've seen gold metal and of course clear and I had the silver metal brackets with skinny wire.
I think it's great for anybody of any age to improve their teeth. I'ms urprised at the cost though, as I had thought since I wore mine (mumble mumble) years ago that it would have gotten a little cheaper.
Buttercup, you shouldn't have probs with the clear brackets but when I had the metal ones, they would rub against my inner lip and cause a sore. So I melted paraffin down and applied it to the metal squares. They have instant brace wax now but I just thought I'd mention it in case you have pain. My only pain was the day or two after tightening but I'd get to skip school so it wasn't that painful.
Right on for braces!!

I dont know about America Red but the reason its expensive here is lack of dentists.

See, now I wouldn't have even thought of that, Buttercup. That makes sense that they would charge more then. I'm sorry they do though. But good luck with the braces! I know you'll be so pleased when you're all done!

I think it is expensive here, because many health insurances do not cover braces, even for younsters. (it cost an extra thousand for the white enamel, but since I speak before audiences besides kids alot, I thought it was worth it)
Let us know how it goes, Buttercup!:D

Even now they don't? I'm not sure that's very fair. They're probably thinking it's all about cosmetics but if someone has problem teeth it can throw out their whole jaw alignment and cause head pain and other things. I have a big beef with insurance companies though.
Yes, I think the white ones would be good for public speaking too.

The funniest ones I ever saw, are when they take those glow-in-the-dark gadgets, and stick them on their braces. (the ortho would have a fit if they knew) But, I usually have a darkened room with lots of lamps and a projector on during the beginning of class, and when they smile-oh my goodness!:wah:

Hi Chonsi, 6 months down the line & they seem to be closing up very well, as you can see in pic (have to click on it for close up) the gap has closed up quite a bit. This is last night & we are a bit boozy (to say the least)
Anyway it shows the teeth quite well, how are you getting on with your braces, still on?

Nothing at all to be ashamed of, more people should care of their teeth. I would have a brace if my teeth were crooked, well done! There are so many people with manky teeth like Billy from Big Brother who is a model, erm how with those gnashers? I feel sorry for those who have bad teeth and can't afford an Orthodontist but some also don't seem to care. Couldn't kiss a fella with crooked teeth, really puts me off.
My sister is the same. She had a brace as a child and has one now as the bottom teeth are very slightly crooked.

Your teeth are looking beautiful, Buttercup. Doesn't that make you feel great! You look gorgeous!
My top teeth are done, there is just the bottom to finish moving, about 3-4 more months. Then I get a retainer. My ortho was so good, my son just started getting his done. (because mine are paid for, I can do his now, he is only 20 years old, it will take only a year-and we're splitting the cost)
I will have to look for a pic later.....

Have you got a wire at the back of your top teeth to hold them or is it a plastic retainer you wear at night?
I'll be having the wire retainer fitted behind as the ortho says they will just start to twist again when he takes the brace off.
How's your son feeling about wearing them?
Thank you Crazygal for your comments, im not ashamed of them, just find them irritating, get full of food & you cant get a right good snog :p

I'll have a wire at the back of them when I'm done, so they will not shift again.
Yes, it takes a good long time to brush your teeth now, and eating has been interesting.

The top is done, she is just leaving them until the bottom aligns properly.

I wore a brace for a while and whilst there were some marks on my teeth when I had them removed a good clean by the dentist soon solved that :-6
