I don't think you were wrong.
Sometimes it's hard to walk the line between getting involved and minding your own business and I think you did okay to err on the side of getting involved. For his sake and for that of anyone he might take out. I think you're good to be concerned for him.

Although I do understand your concern for him, the only person who can really help him is himself. He is the one who has to get up, admit he has a serious problem and go seek professional help. If he doesn't believe he has a problem, nobody will be able to help him. The only other option I can see is intervention.

You're a good caring person AE, your actions prove so!
You have done more than your part in helping your ex, way more then many others would have done! And that's where it should end. Before Tim's feelings get hurt, that's if they haven't been already. Don't let your ex ruin your new life. You said your ex knows he has a problem, if he really wants to stop, then he must also know that he needs AA.

I agree with "cars". You gave him a good start in finding help. Now--back off. The ball is in his court now and it's up to him. Doing any more to help him will just drag you down. Get on with your life and just hope that he does what he needs to do to get himself on the right track. If he ends up getting hurt or hurting someone else, that is not your responsibility. It's his and his alone. There's an old saying that I have always liked: "Sometimes it's kinder to slap a hand than to hold it". Don't keep holding his hand. He has to step up and be an adult.
