New PM Gordon Brown

Well today was the day that the former PM Tony Blair resigned from PM and Gordon Brown stepped in what are your thoughts about it? i personaly think Brown will do a better Job than Blair

I think we can be a little too down on tony blair, sure he has done some stupid stuff in his ten years in power but he must have done some good stuff too...surely....

as they say however change is as good as a rest and so i await the Brown years with anticipation, if he can do better than Blair then good on him...we shall see

For ten years GB has been sitting next to TB agreeing with everything he was doing. If he would have done anything different what has he been playing at for ten years just sitting saying nothing. You now pay more tax, company schemes have been effectively killed off educational opportunity is less than it was, the gulf between rich and poor is greater. Labour now think they have a right to power despite the lack of support in the country. The whole thing is getting farcical. We badly need electoral reform. Not least what are Scottish MP's doing voting on policies that have no effect in Scotland but wouldn't get past without their support.

I'm 61 yrs old and labour through and through. I can only talk through my own experiences but my own quality of life has always been better under labour. My biggest gripe is taxation because my pension that I carefully saved for all my life is taxed and also my meagre savings are taxed apart from my ISA. I work 2 days a week to boost my income, but this is also heavily taxed. I recently sucessfully completed a 3 year project for which i was paid a bonus.....this was also taxed :-1

I am concerened about violent crime in this country, but can this really be attributed to a political party....not sure !

I have always like TB but it will be interesting to see what comes from a G.Brown goverment.

I didn't before only because he was under Blair and now he has a chance to prove himself & maybe save & undo what has been.

He was not under Blair. We do not have a presidential system in this country responsibility supposedly is shared equally amongst the cabinet. Both Thatcher and Blair have taken steps to strengthen the position of prime minister, I would argue to the detriment of our political system.

He could have resigned any time he wanted to and must have stayed because he supported him or he didn't but wanted to keep his cabinet post. As chancellor he held the purse strings.

I said that he was only under Mr Blair because he wasn't in power to say or do anything and didn't really have a say when the so called Mr pieminister was in power and now he has it all without Mr Blair having a say at all.

Bollocks. You clearly know very little about our political system. We do not have an executive separate from the legislature The leader of the party with the largest share of the MP's normally forms the executive to carry through the part policies. The PM is first amongst equals in the cabinet and they all have collective responsibility for what the government comes up with. Any policies they come up with only proceed with the consent of the cabinet with parliament having the final say. If you think GB didn't agree with all that TB was doing or objected to them you are kidding yourself. The idea that GB was there but had nothing to do with what was happening or had no say is ludicrous. If he wasn't happy about the way things were done he should have made his sentiments clear and resigned. Plenty of other cabinet ministers in the past have felt strongly enough to resign rather than put their name to policies they objected to.

Maybe GB's slogan should be "it wisnae me" certainly the spin doctors are doing their best to convince us all.

Sorry, I get abit carried away sometimes. it's just what has happened over the last ten years is not just down to TB but all those around him who said nothing. MP's work for us no one else-at least in theory. Instead we have a bunch if twits that go along with policies they don't agree with just to keep in with Tony.

This isn't a new start it's a politician trying to distance himself from the animosity many feel towards Tony Blair. It's cynical manipulation and hopefully most people will see through it. If he is going to listen now why was he deaf over the last ten years? The next election will be interesting especially to see if labour can hang on to scotland. What happened at the scottish parliament elections has left labour shell shocked-they still seem unable to accept it. It makes life entertaining for a change to see the labour mafia spluttering in their tea as their favourite money spinning schemes get kicked in to touch.

The view that Britain is ruled by Europe is a very different one when seen from outside of Britian.

Sorry but to those of us living in Europe it appears to be a puppet state ruled by the U.S.

I know that will anger many but we see and hear things reported on the BBC, and the American influence is all too clear meanwhile news from Europe is kept to a minimum in order that the UK/US relationship stays in the forefront of the public mind while Europe ( a continent of which you ARE a part) is portrayed as the big bad wolf.:-5

Well I sit on the bench. I certainly do not wan't the conservatives after Maggie destroyed the NHS and unions and got folk to buy homes and then the interest rates shot up and they could no longer afford their morgage and had their home repossessed.But I also hate the new labour thing telling folk what to eat drink smoke and control their children. So when the next election comes and we get a say then for me liberal is the alternative,but would I be wasting my vote?

I doubt you will anger many but I can only speak for myself. TB sucking up to GW annoys a great many people in the UK and is seen as doing us a great deal of harm. British people are amongst the most travelled people in the world, anti european sentiment is very vocal and helped by the fact that many of our papers are owned by the murdoch media empire but it would be a mistake to assume it truly reflects public opinion. Most can see both sides of the question and are not as easily swayed as our politicians would like to think. Though the fact we were daft enough to elect them probably gives them ground s for thinking we are all stupid.
