I have often wondered why people join forums and what their expectations are. I have my own reasons, and they are probably different from some others or maybe the same. Without singleing out a particular person I suspect that some join for friendships, others for advice, some are lonely, some looking for love, others have a need for self expression, some to amuse, some to argue and fight, some to insult, some to sell, some to share, some to educate, some to learn, some to confess, some to complain, some for sympathy, some to brag, some have no idea. Can you think of anything else? So why did you join and has it met your expectations?

Cool topic Lon. I joined my first forum out of curiousity and support, was going through a bleak time in my life and found a forum and signed up. Well it went sideways and I had to leave that one. (yep I got banned ahahahaha) so I was invited to smaller forums created by some other members of the original forum, but the inbreeding got to be too much so I left. After a few months I found this place and I joined mostly to make friends and fill up time that I had in a day, and Voila I am here in FG, and have been since then. Has it met my expectations, oh you bet, at any given time we have at least 25 members online... that is awesome when you consider others range from 3 to 12 at their lowest sign on time. Secondly I have made some amazing friends, I got to meet a group in person which is a memory I will cherish forever, and I can't wait to meet more. This place as been a great experience for me and personally I am glad I rode the waves with it.

I had no clue what a forum was until Sept. of 2006, I read a lot of threads on another forum which was on a site I joined just to reunite with School friends...I didn't like how some people acted, got old pretty quick...but I DID like the interaction and thought...like Reba's song..."is there life out there?"...so I googled the word Forum....and wa-la!!

I know I've shared this before, but to answer your question Lon, I had no expectation, had no clue...but I will tell you that I'm very thankful that I found "the Garden" People here have NO clue how much they have helped me and encouraged me, basically because I haven't told them every single time...but I feel that if I HAD expectations...The Members of FG has already filled them!!:-4 :-4

I heard Norah Jones hung out on these forums, and I figured if I ever have a chance of her serenading me with old Bob Dylan tunes while she is naked I should start working on it now.

I stumbled across this forum, the very first morning my fingers touched the keyboard of my brand new computer, Met my expectations??? Has blown my mind actually. It opened up the world to me. Gave me the opportunity to use my writing skills that had been dormant for years. Taught me patience. Like Minks, gave me the opportunity to have an incredible experience in England. Membership has broken my heart sometimes. Because of the things Ive read, Some because I felt pain for a stranger, others because over the course of time, they revealed that they were violent, cruel, or just plain mean. The only aspect I do not like about participating on the forum is the fact that I feel that there are those who come here to do research. ( This is not directed at you Lon) They want to gather information on people who join forums. They try to put together a psychological profile of people who participate. The reason this bothers me, is because I think the researchers feel superior. To me, that is exploitation of the meek, or the troubled, or perhaps the lonely. And the reason it is wrong, is because it is being done without consent, and because there are those who are not wise enough to understand that they are being used as subjects for research.

I was at trhe same site as wonder wendy! started for the same reasons really, then went in to other parts of the site out of curiosity. It is so very very bad there now,, its amazing how nasty some poeple can be to each other, but the main failing is it is not moderated. One of my friends from there told me about this forum, so we came here:D This place is much better, its more adult really cos poeple can have disagreements without tearing each other apart:wah: much more civilised. so i think my reason was nosiness and my expectations are met:wah:

Peg, I joined because I am curious about people, places and things. How people live, where and how they live, how they earn a living and how they feel about a wide range of things. I joined to learn and to share thoughts and ideas with others. In attempting to do this, it's been referred to as research by some

Weeder, even if your post is directed at me I would take no offense, because some of the questions that I have posted in the past could very well be construed as research, however, it is only my own individual curiosity about people and things that brings forth such questions. Many questions need not even be asked, because people quite willingly share the most intimate parts of their life on a PUBLIC FORUM, and I find that quite amazing. Weeder, you strike me as a very thoughtful and caring person, but maybe a bit too sensitive about the reasons people post certain questions. I really don't believe that we have any researchers on FG or that any FG members are being exploited

I can understand that. I find people very interesting, and the way they live, their perception of life etc. I often see people ( bit of a people watcher) and right or wrong, judge them on appearence or the way they are talking or behaving and think my god some people live in a completely different world!!! I suppose the same goes for me, i live in a completely different world to certain people. Its an amazing thought really.

I have this penchant for looking out for the under dog. And I am overly sensitive. I should have been a union leader. I have witnessed people over the years be bullied and almost challenged to stick up for themselves. And I am certain that on a number of ocassions ( in the past) visitors probed the less self confident for information about themselves, under the guise of frienship. Once again Lon, my observations are not connected to you.

As I said, my expectations have more than been met on FG, If it were over tomorrow, I would have memories of a very positive experience to take with me. I also do think your thread was a good one. You have been here a long time, and have offered good counsel, on many ocassions, and on many subjects that had the potential to help others.

I've been thinking about this all day. I came across FG by accident. I was actually looking for a forum on a specific subject and while I was browsing, I found this place.

After hovering for a day or two, you all made me laugh so much that I wanted to be part of it.

My expectations of this forum have been blown way out of the water!

I joined with the idea that I would maybe have chats with people from time to time, but you know what?? I'm totally hooked!!

I have to come here every day!

I've only been here since the end of April and you have all made me feel very, very welcome. Thank you for that:-4

I hope that the friendships I have made here will last for many years to come. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being such lovely people :-4 :-4

BTW - Yes, I am a big sap:wah:
Very nearly perfect ... :D
