I'm not a movie nut but there are some that I think ought to be required of everyone to see because of their message.
They are:
Holocaust
Roots
The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman
The Good Earth
The Enchanted Cottage
MASK
All Quiet on the Western Front (with Richard Thomas)
To Kill A Mockingbird
What are yours?

The Enchanted Cottage is an old black and white film starring Robert Mitchum among others. It's about a homely girl who goes to live at this cottage. Then handsome arrogant Mitchum gets disfigured in war andhis fiance won't have him anymore because he's not handsome anymore so *he* goes to live at the cottage. The two fall in love and everything is magical until someone spills the big secret- that the cottage is magic and that's why they looked beautiful to each other. They see each other for what they really are then but they realize they loved each other enough to look past their looks and see the real person. It's a romantic movie in the old sense of romance, not cheezy chickflickdom.

One of my favorite movies. It was the "Father Knows Best" Dad who played the male lead, not Robert Mitchum. Can't think of his name. Dorothy McGuire played the female lead. I hear Cher at one time wanted to make a remake.

Robert Mitchum was in "Night of the Hunter", which is also a must see. Lillian Gish and Shelley Winters was also in it.
