I'm still struggling with deciding whether or not you expect to be taken seriously.
I thought this was a humour "column" a la Borat for the first while. If you want people to think intelligently about what you are saying you might start with a spell checker. Firefox comes with one built right into the browser.

They said that they all acted under an imminent threat of death or serious injury against them or those for whom it was reasonable for them to accept responsibility. They were all members of the organisation of Young Intellectuals of Afghanistan ("the YIA"). The Taliban, who were then in power in Afghanistan, had discovered this organisation and identified it as a political opponent. They had arrested and tortured four of its members, and these members between them knew the names of the respondents and most of the organisation's other members. The Taliban customarily used torture to extract information. They would therefore have discovered all these names, and these people and their families would all have been at risk of capture, torture and death.
In turn they would have been forced to reveal the names of other members of the YIA, so that the risk of capture, torture and death extended to all the members of the organization. There was also evidence to the effect that a specific list of 35 members of the YIA had fallen into the Taliban's hands.
The respondents maintained that they had no alternative but to act as they did. The actions they took after the plane landed at Moscow and Stansted continued, they said, to be the result of duress, because there was then an imminent threat of their being removed by the relevant authorities directly to Afghanistan, or indirectly via Pakistan (with the risk of death or serious injury because Pakistan would return them to Afghanistan).
http://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWCA/Civ/2006/1157.html
Firstly, given the circumstances described, would you criticize the hijackers for taking the hijacking action in the first place?
Secondly, regardless of the circumstances described, why are you advocating extrajudicial killing on the part of "they" - presumably the political masters of United Kingdom Special Forces?
Thirdly, why are you blaming Jack Straw instead of Charles Clarke or John Reid who were Home Secretary at the time of their release from custody and their appeal, respectively? Jack Straw's contribution is at http://www.publications.parliament.uk/p ... column_417 and does not include, as it could not have included, a "promise to boot them out". What Jack Straw said, before the facts which led to the successful appeal against conviction were known, was "While I must and will act in accordance with the law, I am determined that nobody should consider that there can be any benefit to be obtained by hijacking. Subject to compliance with all legal requirements, I would wish to see removed from this country all those on the plane as soon as reasonably practicable".

I thought I'd quoted correctly, Bill. Hopki wants to go back to the state of policing in this country prior to the introduction of the Human Rights Act, in order to "untie our bobbies hands and let them deal with criminals properly". I thought I'd provide an illustration of what the demented bent bastards were like in those days before their claws were pulled by the legislation he's bitching about.
Would you like to talk about "why didnt they send marksmen to shoot them dead when they walked away from the plane" as well, while you're here?

You should make up your mind, hopki. Ten years jail or judicial murder, which are we meant to prefer?

It's not their human rights that should concern you but your own. Innocent until proven guilty is a fundamental principle we take for granted. regardless of the crime all are entitled to fair treatment. You also live in a country where if you are arrested by the police they have to either charge you or let you go. If they beat the crap out of you then they are subject to the same laws as you are.
No free country should ever give the police the right to arrest and hold people without trial and should step hard on any govt that thinks they should be able to. You also live in a country where the police are not controlled by the govt, where they are not routinely armed. None of that is accidental or is the result of a nice govt or ruling class giving those rights to us. We took them at the point of a sword. Governments should live in fear of their people not the other way around.
Selective ranting about particular issues while fun rather misses the point. I assume you take for granted your right to say what you like about Gordon Brown and would have no hesitation in shouting abuse at him if you had the opportunity and thought it warranted. You may even feel the occasional urge to take the **** out of the church of England or any other religion you want while following your own particular cult. Perhaps you think you shouldn't be allowed to do so, who knows, who cares.
There's nothing wrong with the ideals behind the human rights act, the implementation may leave a lot to be desired but at least you can take for granted your right to complain about it.
What have you got against liberals? Don't you believe in individual freedom or something? Funny how the opponents of fair trials and freedom from arbitrary arrest never think they might be the victim of an injustice.

I'm not much of a peace-nik loving liberal, but you know, people's belief in freedom and the rule of law is most apparent when things are difficult (as they are right now), and to ditch the enshrinement of human rights in British law or European law because of terrorism and crime (which admittedly is frightening and devisive) would be a terrible mistake, I think that certainy an argument could be made in terms of law "enforcement", "sentencing", its application and interpretation etc, but to ditch wholesale articles of law that exist to protect the right to human dignity of a nation's citizens is not something that should be countenaced in the current circumstances, because simply put, they are not drastic enough circumstances to warrent it, (things are difficult, but not impossible) Britain may well "be at war" as some people put it, but its not a conventional war, and its not one that at present warrants such draconian measures for the general citizenry, which would be counterproductive to say the least and quite sinister, and that goes for all other European countries, and the States (where it seems the state has gone over the line in terms of infringemnt of rights and Americans are unhappy at that).

buttercup, in the case of someone who considers himself a writer, punctuation and spelling are of extreme importance. You also failed to notice that I addressed the only issue he clearly enunciated, human rights laws being abolished. As you've stated, you were in a mood from your own rant about spelling so I'll assume this is now settled.
Hopki, you are a megalomaniac to think anyone is worshiping a two bit "column" in which an imaginary editor is barely floating on the good will of moderators who actually have little desire to see this column continue unmolested. If you would rather address the posts and not the posters we might progress a little further into your deconstruction.

alternatively, if you wish to just have a rant and not have to talk to anyone then you can start posting them in a journal.
Not this one in particular, we just like to pick a conversation and finish it. Keeping it in one thread is usually the best way to accomplish that.

i am just a writer of a column.that is debatable.
maybe it would be easier if i didnt reply to postings and just let you rant at me.

If you can find a single instance of Victor Meldrew expressing a racist sentiment I shall eat my hat. Had you called yourself Alf Garnett, and retained any degree of mock satiric outrage at these filthy ideas you peddle, you might possibly have worked within an amusing framework. To pervert the intentions of Victor Meldrew's creators in this way is mere effrontery.

How is it that I didn't know this was a real character until just now? For someone who was supposedly worshiping your column.... :wah:
With this new bit of information... get your act together, hopki, you seem to be having an identity crisis. Are you not victor or are you not his editor. Because I find it hard to believe you can be not both of them and still call yourself a columnist.

I thought this was a humour "column" a la Borat for the first while. If you want people to think intelligently about what you are saying you might start with a spell checker. Firefox comes with one built right into the browser.
SASSY !
