Seriously. There are still people who actively promote drilling a hole in your skull to reach "higher enlightenment." This was popular throughout time for many reasons but so were a lot of other crackpot procedures.
Yeah. And next time I'm feeling blue, I'll just give myself an ice pick lobotomy.
It reminds me of that Far Side cartoon with the caption:
"Home Gall Bladder Surgery: Third in a Series of Time-Life Books"

Come on guys, you'll have people making a total mess of it if you suggest drill bits.
Firstly, the intention of trepanning is not, repeat not, to leave a hole in your head like people could see in through. Secondly, you're not, repeat not, meant to touch anything inside the skull, that's not safe.
There's two ways, the slow way and the scarier way. Neither are altogether without risk but so is crossing the road. For both of them you have to peel back a section of scalp to bare the skull bone, and when you've done you have to neatly fold it back where it came from.
The slow way is tap tap tap with a lightweight maul and a fine bolster. I don't recommend a chisel for this, it's too easy to push it too far and complicate matters. The scarier way is a circular sawbit on a slow electric drill, with the inner guide bit set an eighth of an inch further from the bone than the saw bit so it doesn't penetrate. The one-inch or one-and-a-half inch diameter bit is reckoned adequate but people have different views on this. The nice thing about drilling this way is that you can use a head and drill clamp so there's less involuntary movement on anyone's part.
Either way, be careful not to leave bone fragments underneath. Carefully wash them all out with saline first. The traditional way of fixing down the skin flap is stitching but superglue has a better track record for cosmetic reasons unless you want to show off.
If anyone wants to post pictures here of how they get on I suggest a third party uses the camera, the first two should be paying close attention to what they're up to.

It's probably illegal in Ireland, most things are.
