This became a rather interesting thread and I rather missed it at the time.
It occurred to me that the OP deserved a very long post in response.
Regardless of what others may or may not think, no one here really uses this forum for the benefit of anyone but themselves. We could probably argue about that for awhile but, in reality, though we might make efforts to be here on occasion for another member who is having a hard time, it is really just because we want others to be here for us when we need them too. Then there are those who just don't give a crap about what other members are doing in RL and just come here to amuse themselves.
To ask whether or not members read long posts is not a question that is likely to benefit a single person unless the answers were expected to encourage members to stop making long posts thereby benefiting the OP or just to get a discussion going regardless of who may or may not feel affronted... which would benefit the OP as well.
How about a thread on whether or not we like threads that are started just because the member is bored? Half the forum would disappear. As you might have noticed, this post is now getting fairly long. There is a benefit to me to doing this in that, by the time people get to the end of my post they may have forgotten a lot of the content so I might get away with saying some stuff that otherwise might have turned into a big argument. I buried my own comments. Just like some members know they can bury comments in the Anything Random Thread. One little sentence... written and quickly then lost forever. Did that thing need to be said? Does anything on this forum need to be said? Does that crossword every morning really make the world a better place to live in? How many words in a crossword do you come across and *know* you will never use them? Yet so many people do crosswords and feel like they've enhanced their life. Perhaps a big long post is like a stream of consciousness crossword. Either way... it's better that this thread existed than didn't exist. Just as it is better that long posts exist than don't.
Now I shall have to go back and see if I managed to offend anyone as I decided to not proof read any of this post. Just because that also might annoy some people.
oh... a few smilies... :wah: :-3

:wah: Every once on a while we'll get some conspiratist who will insist that Masons are all about the 666 and the Illuminati and boiling babies and stuff. It makes me crazy! Now the Rosicrucians on the other hand.... :wah:
