What's the best way to dispose of a busted computer? I don't want to put it in the landfill; I doubt there's anything salvageable on it and I don't know what to do with it. What do most people do?

Most dumps have a special section that accepts computers, tv, dvd's and other electronic appliances. It's a no no to dump with regualr garbage. Call your local dump and ask.

It depends on what "busted" means, but http://www.azstrut.org/refurbctrs.html is a good link.

Thank you Spot for that link! I can check locally and see if any schools might want it. Thank you.
Jimbo, "nationwide" comes from ZZ Top's song "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide."
It's like saying you are so bad (in the good way) that you cover the whole territory.
Here's the lyrics:
Well I was rollin' down the road in some cold blue steel,
I had a blues man in back, and a beautician at the wheel.
We going downtown in the middle of the night
We laughing and I'm jokin' and we feelin' alright.
Oh I'm bad, I'm nationwide.
Yes I'm bad, I'm nationwide.
Easin' down the highway in a new Cadillac,
I had a fine fox in front, I had three more in the back.
They sportin' short dresses, wearin' spike-heel shoes,
They smokin' Lucky Strikes, and wearing nylons too.
'Cause we bad, we nationwide.
Yeah we bad, we nationwide.
Well I was movin' down the road in my V-8 Ford,
I had a shine on my boots, I had my sideburns lowered.
With my New York brim and my gold tooth displayed,
Nobody give me trouble cause they know I got it made.
I'm bad, I'm nationwide.
Well I'm bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, I'm nationwide.

I take my old electronics to the Hazadous Waste depot at the municipal public works yard. They send them to a regional recycler who does a proper job of it.
Some companies merely ship them to China, where they are dismantled for the valuable materials, then the remains (most of it) are simply dumped wherever it's convenient.
I watched a documentary (Manufactured Landscapes) where a town in China "recycled" computers by having old people and little kids smash the circuit boards with a hammer, then pick out the parts. There was a mountain of old computers in a yard, and dozens of people were beating the hell out of them. The film maker said they often burn the circuit boards to free up the parts, releasing all kinds of toxins into the air, including a particularily nasty chemical that is used as a flame retardant, that is showing up in the fat cells of animals and people in the Arctic. He said you can smell the burning boards well before you enter the towns where this is a major industry.
