Salon article on Quinceanaras

Post by chonsigirl »

That's not been my experience with Quinceaneras, though if you have disposable wealth to spend a fortune it can be pricey. It is the same as a sweet sixteen party. My daughters had the choice which one they wanted-and choose neither. (they are kind of shy)

In traditional ones, there are certain formalized dances, ceremonies to participate in, then the big party afterwards. And the food, oh my. Caloric heaven....

It is the big event, just like in other cultures: Bar Mitzvah's, Sweet Sixteen, etc.

Hi Chonsi!

I've always found them a bit fascinating so I was happy to see this article. :)

I did not know about the religious significance though.

It is a coming of age, the religious ceremony usually involved means that the girl has become a woman, in the eyes of God. The religious ceremony is first.

Stylized dances depends on the ethnic background and culture-they usually practice for weeks with very formal dances from the days of the Spanish. They are all symbolic mixtures of the past. After the feast-and gosh, there is some good food-then the modern dancing begins. (oh, I am hungry now for homemade food, ha-ha, they will bring it to my daughter's wedding, my stomach digressed....)

I can remember watching them practice one dance sequence, they were from Zacatecas. It was very formalized, like watching ancient minuet type sequences, with gentleman courtiers and young ladies. Ha-the grannies and me would watch them, the grannies would explain each sequence, and we all laughed at the young boys having to endure the ordeal.
