Walmart: Mexican teenagers work for FREE!
It says it's a customary practice nationwide.
Would you believe the same practice goes on right here in America? It's true!! Base grocery stores, called commissaries, have baggers who work only for tips. Most are retirees trying to make extra money.
There are plenty of real tragedies to complain about without creating ones from whole cloth.

I didn't know that, Accountable. I am surprised that a base commissary would pull that. I would expect them to pay minimum wage rather than use kids (people) for free. I do question why any kid would do that rather than just go get a job at McDonalds or whatever's available (I mean in the US, I don't know what is available in Mexico) and it may not be a tragedy but I still think it's wrong.

I think the fact that it *is* Walmart drives it home. WM can afford to pay their people better, they can afford to hire full time instead of everybody getting part time work there and they can certainly afford to pay kids or adults who want to bag and carry. I just find it really disgusting.

I'm a military wife, and grew up a military daughter, my first job was bagging groceries at the base commissary (grocery store). You only work for tips there too and it's still in practice today all over the united states, well anywhere there's a commisary. I think you have to be 15 to work there. Housewives do it. Retirees. You name it.
They pack your groceries and take them to your car and you tip them.
I don't see anyone screaming about that.
What is the difference?

Maybe its desirable. Like being a caddy. You never know when youre going to get the big one. Its all about the anticipation. Thats the important thing here...anticipation. They even made a song about it.
wal mart still sucks though. Notice I didnt give them capital letters ? :sneaky:

Yep, well deserved too.
Maybe it's just me but I don't believe in doing work in the hope someone tips me. I had enough of that as a hairdresser. Fair work. Fair pay. Tips extra and optional.
