Same here.
How about when a computer calls you and says, "Please hold for an important message". You call me and think I'm actually going to sit there on hold?
Being put on hold when I'm on my cell phone usually lasts for a few seconds. I only call gov't services, the phone or cable company from a land line. I generally don't hold for cable either. It's not good enough to warrant the wait.
There is a phrase in English `they`ve got you by the short and curlies`. If you need to speak, you`ll have to hold on, but if it`s only to enquire about a product or something, I`d hang up immediately and go to one of their competitors!
I started looking at things like the forum garden as something to do while waiting on these *&((**(( call centres to answer. Unfortunately I have to use them rather a lot.

(I once waited almost "20" minutes, cause I lost track of time, while listening to the great fill in music)
HOW LONG DO YOU HOLD ON THE LINE BEFORE HANGING UP??
I GET THROUGH FAST!!!! HERE'S HOW. Push what ever button they have for new business instead of service. When they come on, say you are sorry that you hit the wrong button and wanted service. They will switch you over to a live person.
They love the new business, but drag their feet on service.
LOL! That's the same thing I do, Lon! I use their own system against them. Usually if you don't press any button at all, they think your calling from a rotary phone and put you right through.
If not, I push the number of someone I know will be at their desk, like the manager, then I tell them, "Oh sorry, can you connect me?"
Sometimes, if a person asks, "Can you hold?", I tell them, "No, I'm on long distance, and this isn't my phone."
All the world's a stage and the men and women merely players...Shakespeare
