Kate McCann, 39, fears she could be charged over the young girl's death after being named as an "arguida", or formal suspect, in the case.
She returned to the family's rented house in the Algarve village of Praia da Luz after being quizzed by police for five hours.
Portuguese detectives appear to be working on the theory that Mrs McCann killed her daughter by accident and covered up the death by claiming she was abducted.
Test results from the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham received in recent days have apparently boosted this hypothesis.
Mr McCann's alleged role is not clear, but sources said police believe he was an accessory to the killing.
Mrs McCann underwent 11 hours of questioning on Thursday, during the course of which detectives suggested that traces of Madeleine's DNA were found in the family's hire car, a silver Renault Scenic that they are still using.
She is understood to have told them angrily there was "no way" this could be the case because they did not lease the vehicle until 25 days after her daughter disappeared.
After returning to the police station, Mrs McCann was formally made an arguida and detectives put 22 key questions to her.
A family spokesman said: "It was clearly suggested to her that she had accidentally been responsible for Madeleine's death." The spokesman said: "She is upset but bearing up, and frustrated that all this attention has been paid to this rather than trying to find Madeleine."

oh Glitter I watched a disturbing story on TV last nite a documentary on this little boy who was in and out of hospital over the period of 6 or so months with blisters all over his lips, chin, and chest. He would vomit a lot and he was sick on and off.
Wnds up his mother was poisoning him, and the warped thing about this was she did it so she could have her ex husband near by. Yep she was so messed up over her ex that this is how she thought they could be together all over the illness of her son. It's sick and yes it is classic
Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy
terrible isn't it.

Is it just me? I'm finding it hard to feel sympathy for anyone with this peculiarity. Hard to believe it's a bonafide illness. I've heard about mothers giving their kids arsenic to keep them sickly for the attention. It's just creepy.

2 of my female colleagues live close to eachother in a new city next to the village I live in. Their kids are going to the same school. Last Tuesday 2 neighbours who live in their neighbourhood had a fight again. These people are making problems for at least 3 years already.
One of the fighting neighbours was shot to death with 2 bullits in his head, early in the afternoon on the street, when the kids came out of school.
The victims has got 4 kids, including a twin. The twins are going to seperate classes, both my colleagues have their boy kid in the same class of one of the twin. Their kids have been playing in the victims hous regularly. The killer has got 3 kids too, also on the same school....
Its a grazy world sometimes.....the kids pay the bill

oh I am with ya there Glitter. But maybe not enough is known about the illness and maybe it's like so many mental illness's we have trouble wrapping our heads around. I dunno. I mean some days I find myself thinking badly about a person with an eating disorder, or an addiciton and I think hmmmm what happens to humans when they fall apart.

yeah you don't wanna feel sorry for those you suspect are just vieing for attention but.... what do we really know about them. But still illness or not, harming an innocent child for the sake of attention is creepy you bet. I do know on the docu I watched about it that particular woman went to jail, for life.
The boy was handed over to his father, and they said they did not know if he will grow up to have digestion and respiratory problems later in life or not. Just as bloody awful as FAS Children. Lock those mothers up too I say or Crack babies. UGH now I am on a roll ok where is my voice recording now ahahaha

But on the flip side, if it's an illness, should they go to prison?
If a schizophrenic commits murder, do we imprison him or do we give him shrink help and rehab? That mental illness line is a hard one to walk. You don't want to criminalize mental illness but yet should they be made to pay and how much?

good point there Glitter. I think you are right I think we should get them the help they need.

I just don't know the answer. I guess I'm just not totally sold on the mental part because it seems more um....what's the word...intentional, than it does symptomatic of illness.

Now the authorities are stating both parents are involved, and have offered the parents to take a deal.
Such a beautiful little girl.
