I can't see any negatives to having an Identity Card. It's no different than having a Driver's License, Social Security Card etc. In fact, I hope that someday they will have a tiny chip imbedded in our skin that would have our medical history, personal data etc. on it. You have privacy if you go and live on a desert island all by yourself, but if you live in a society with others and utilize what society has to offer, then you give up that right to privacy.

The Brits seem hung up over ID cards.
We have lived with them here in various forms for a very long time.
They are essential in a modern society.
Read Lon and others' posts - they make excellent sense.
Not to have them is inviting widespread corruption and inefficiencies.
Are British passports 'machine readable'?
If they are then every British passport holder already has their personal data stored on a computer readable strip (including any arrestable offenses).
If they are not you cannot any longer travel to the USA under the 'visa waiver' program.
If it helps to reduce corruption and therefore saves taxpayers dollars why is it such an issue in UK?
It's your money it's saving.

I'm a little undecided, I see it's good points, I also see us (hospital staff) calling the police a lot more with being able to instantly tell illegals.
I also have no more pockets left in my card holder.

We are protected, but we have to report illegal immigrants.

The bad part about ID cards is the need for them in the first place. The need for them says that we are basically dishonest and can’t be trusted to say who we are and give accurate information about ourselves. They also speak to the fact that we are so spread out and disconnected that we don’t know the people we do business with every day.
Schooling results in matriculation. Education is a process that changes the learner.
