Six black students at Jena High School in Central Louisiana were arrested last December after a school fight in which a white student was beaten and suffered a concussion and multiple bruises. The six black students were charged with attempted murder and conspiracy. They face up to 100 years in prison without parole. The fight took place amid mounting racial tension after a black student sat under a tree in the schoolyard where only white students sat. The next day three nooses were hanging from the tree.
Jena is a small town nestled deep in the heart of Central Louisiana. Until recently, you may well have never heard of it. But this rural town of less than 4,000 people has become a focal point in the debate around issues of race and justice in this country
Last December, six black students at Jena High School were arrested after a school fight in which a white student was beaten and suffered a concussion and multiple bruises. The six black students were charged with attempted second-degree murder and conspiracy. They face up to 100 years in prison without parole. The Jena Six, as they have come to be known, range in age from 15 to 17 years old
Just over a week ago, an all-white jury took less than two days to convict 17 year-old Mychal Bell, the first of the Jena Six to go on trial. He was convicted of aggravated battery and conspiracy charges and now faces up to 22 years in prison.
Black residents say that race has always been an issue in Jena, which is 85 percent white, and that the charges against the Jena Six are no exception. The origins of the story can be traced back to early September when a black high school student requested permission to sit under a tree in the schoolyard where usually only white students sat. The next day three nooses were found hanging from the tree

Oh God, I just noticed this thread. This community is 20 minutes from me. I used to work in Jena, and know several of the people involved. Know one thing - the media reports are not always correct at all. They sensationalize by right, and some of it is either over or under reported.

I have noticed that it's almost PC to take cracks at white people, but it's still obscene to do vice versa. I don't mind that part myself because I'll laugh at ethnic jokes or jokes about our cultural differences no matter who they're talking about and that certainly includes white people. I think it's funny, not offensive. Well...some will go over the line, but I'm speaking generally. I might be digressing, sorry. I agree that racism will never end. It's lovely to think it will and hope that it will but human nature dislikes and mistrusts what is different and for some people, difference is all they see. They fail to see the similarities. I just think it will always be something we have to fight against. But *some* of the black attitudes I have come across (and a few others but I'll stick to topic) continue to breed and foster that hatred as a point of pride. I didn't think you were being racist...not at all. I appreciated the post...I've seen a similar one written from the point of view of white Americans. There will always be someone to call that piece racist, but I think that's more a kneejerk reaction to political correctness than it is actual thinking for oneself.

forgive me if i have the facts wrong..but if i understand this right..a child asked could they sit under a traditionally white tree./???????????? the problem began right there...a tree on school property paid by federal and state taxes..upheld by our government should not have had a white tree to begin with...regardless of the motive of the child doing the asking..the nooses hung in the tree were wrong..and hince the trouble started..the teachers and leaders of the school are in the wrong for allowing the grouping up of color and allowing a "white tree" to begin with...imho....

Okay I watched the video (hopefully one of the thugs was taping the fight because I'd hate to think a bystander didn't try to help that kid) and I'm not willing to say it was a race thing. I'm not willing to say no either but if you live in a predominantly, let's say black, neighborhood and you happen to get jumped by five black guys couldn't that just be coincidence? I need proof. It's way to easy to say it happened because the kid was white.
Also...notice how the victim is referred to as white instead of Caucasian, but the black kids are "african american?" Wanna bet not a one of them has come from Africa?
If it was racially instigated, I hop ethey don't cheapen the assault by terming it a "hate crime." That's lame, IMO. It was an assault period.
Also, I caught a news segment today about the "Jena 6" being tried in juvenile court as they were minors at the time. Some people involved are complaining that the white kids who hung the nooses in the tree aren't being punished severely enough and should be punished just as much as the Jena 6.
Uh..NO. Maybe it's just me, but chucking a rope in a tree is not as bad as beating someone. Regardless of how symbolic it is. When did we start prosecuting people for being stupid and obnoxious?!

If it was racially instigated, I hop ethey don't cheapen the assault by terming it a "hate crime." That's lame, IMO. It was an assault period.
Also, I caught a news segment today about the "Jena 6" being tried in juvenile court as they were minors at the time. Some people involved are complaining that the white kids who hung the nooses in the tree aren't being punished severely enough and should be punished just as much as the Jena 6.
Uh..NO. Maybe it's just me, but chucking a rope in a tree is not as bad as beating someone. Regardless of how symbolic it is. When did we start prosecuting people for being stupid and obnoxious?!

What's really amazing is how many make so many judgments based on biased media reports that fail to report everything, or they twist it around to make it about race. No one remembers the victim. No one realizes the madness going on in this friggin community now. No one realizes that we've now got the friggin "New black Panther" party deciding they'll patrol and provide protection. No one listens when the citizens of this community talk - they just claim they're trying to cover up. It's the Al Sharptons, and Jesse Jacksons, and MLK 3's that cause this type of turmoil, and it would be best if they all stayed out of it. I know several of the people involved in this, including some of the officials, and while I don't care for all of them, the damn pictures being painted of them are way off.

I'm not buying it. A white person getting jumped by a number of black guys- could be BECAUSE THEY'RE PUNKASSES WITH NOTHING BETTER TO DO and you're their next number! Now, I'm not going to talk about your experience because I don't want to make it that personal and maybe in your case one of them said something about you being white and maybe that was the reason. I wasn't there and I'm not going to risk insulting you. But as for this kid in the video, until I hear one of the black guys say something about his "white ass," I'm not going to automatically scream race riot. That's way to easy to do and then some clown comes along and cries "hate crime" which lessens what it actually was- an assault on a fellow human being.

It's when the charges were lessened that this came into play. To have the term "aggravated" attached to battery, a weapon must be present, and in this case, the D.A. stated that the weapon he was looking at were the tennis shoes. Sharpton and his ilk don't give a damn about any of those boys, they're just interested in getting their faces splattered on t.v.
