Any fellow cat lovers out there? What breeds and/or color of cats do you like, and do you have any yourself?

I have two cats...and they are great companions for me.

Thanks for sharing your photos and stories with me...here is one of mine...

In 1990, I had a beautiful copper eyed black cat that resembled the Bombay breed. His name was Michael and he was just two years of age. This cat was very fond of me and followed me everywhere, just a very loving, affectionate, sweet cat.

Anyway, he got really sick and it was so suddenly, too.... I took him to the veterinarian and the vet told me that he had jaundice...that his liver was in pretty bad shape. This cat was only two! The vet gave me no promises, but did tell me that for now he would simply sedate Michael and let him sleep....in the morning the vet would go to work on him.

That night, very late, actually, around 2:30 a.m., I awoke and told my husband that Michael was dead. My husband assured me that there is no way I could know this, and that Michael was at the animal hospital sleeping. I told my husband again that Michael was indeed dead...and I had The Beatles song, "I'll Follow the Sun" lyrics in my mind at the time, too..."and now the time has come, and so, my love, I must go. And though I'll lose a friend, in the end you will know. One day you'll find that I have gone. For tomorrow may rain so I'll follow the sun..." To this day everytime I hear this song I think of my beloved cat, Michael.

The next morning I called the veterinarian to ask about Michael. He told me that he had bad news...Michael died. I asked him, just out of curiosity, approximately what time Michael died. He said around 2 a.m. Since I awoke so closely to that time, my face dropped....in shock. I then told my vet about the way I woke up, and at what time, and that I felt that Michael had died.

The vet told me that since I was very close to this cat, it didn't surprise him one bit...that perhaps Michael's spirit came to me to say "Goodbye".

A strange story for some, I know, but this is true...it happened.

Thanks for sharing that, stony moss. It reminds me of a female black and white cat I had years ago...she had four kittens in the same litter, and one in particular stood out....this cat was not just black and white, like the others...this one had some orange in him.

I asked the veterinarian if it was possible that there could be more than one father (my cat at that time was one who went outdoors), and he assured me that there can definitely be more than one father.

I then remembered having seen a ginger/marmalade tabby in the back at some point and I guessed that he was most likely the father of that one odd colored kitten. (the other father was black and white like my female).

I have had cats all my life. One I have now is Lilly-she is about 11 or 12 years old-was a stray someon dropped off. My neighborhood is great for that-move and leave cats behind or drop off the kittens. We had a cat we called Green eyes-a tom cat feral-let us pat him now and then-hung around area for almost 8 years, got torn to shreds by 2 pit bulls-thought he was dead and showed up 6 weeks later-he died a year later on neighbors door step-probably pneumonia-was too wild for anyone to catch. Then the Humane Society quit trapping the cats-no $ so everyone tried to leave water or food out but they multiplied and got killed by the dogs in area-people in this area train their pit bulls to attack cats. For years no more strays until about a month ago-now have 2 pregnant ones meowing on my patio-it is a safe house-gate is locked-no pits get in-leave water and a lil bit of food but now have tons coming in-taking the tame one in a cage and calling animal shelter-cannot catch the others and animal control will NOT come out unless they are in a cage or box. I feel so bad for these poor cats-no one seems responsible anymore!

My friend has a male black Persian...I have never seen a cat so calm in my life as this one. No matter what is going on around him, he doesn't fuss at all...just sits there and takes it all in his stride. :)

growing up when we got a second cat they barely tolerated each other, but I know a lot of people that got one later on and just takes a little time to get used to each other.

They usually adjust to each other after 2-3 weeks. Some take a little longer, some less time. I have 3 cats. My little grey and peach tabby loves me when I am trying to sleep. It'll do anything and everything to get me to pet it while I try to sleep. When I'm awake, it doesn't know I exist LOL.

At work, I have been feeding about 6 cats. Some are strays, some belong to people. Not knowing which ones are the strays, I am afraid to try to find them homes. I'd really hate to give away someone else's pet.

I have a gorgeous fluffy white cat with gold eyes, a wide face, and very wide paws. She's about 9 pounds, but she looks twice the size of my neighbor's sleek 12-pound cat. All fur...and she likes to share her fur with my black clothes. Never the white clothes, those aren't as comfortable to lay on, apparently. LOL

I don't know much about her history since I adopted her from the Humane Society. She's been with me for about 3 years now. At first we pretty much ignored each other. She was very shy, and very confused about her abrupt life changes. But in time she started sleeping at the foot of my bed, then later moved up to lay across my stomach. These days she's completely confident, and likes to meow at me whenever I toss and turn because it forces her to change her own sleeping position.

She's a funny thing. When I come home from work, she leaps off the couch, pretends she wasn't sleeping while I slaved away for her cat food/toys, and then does figure eights on her back.

When visitors come, she runs to the door, and growls. Then she runs back to the couch and huddles there, glaring at them. Until they pet her...then she melts.

She tells me when she wants to go outside by standing on her back two paws and pounding the door with her front two paws. This is also how she asks to come back in...but woe to me if I don't get there fast enough. She chews me out by meowing for five minutes, following me around the house to do so.

I'm a dog person, so the cat thing is still new - even after 3 years. But she's a good friend, and I do love her. The brat!
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.

Point well made, Jack. I have a dog and hamster that my cat, Sushi, tolerates me to own. I'm quite thankful for her mercy as she could have destroyed either in seconds. I am quite astounded with her patience as the dog continually tries to stand on her head. She has more patience than I. I do think I am currently being punished as she is ignoring me more than usual but I earn forgiveness when I rub her ears the way she taught me.

(My exhusband named her. He is a chef and apparently does not like cats. She chose not to take it personally.)

Right now I share my house with 2 cats (Percy: male, large, black, long-haired, psychotic - and Weebles: female, tiny, white, short-haired, love of Percy's life), and several fish including my most recent adoption, Lucky the betta. He's a gorgeous combination of a deep wine color blended with irridescent blue and green. He was at the pet store in a small plastic glass and when I went over to see the different colors of bettas, he put his wee face right up to the plastic and looked down into my face. That did it. I was hooked (no pun intended!). :D I named him Lucky because in the span of about an hour he was unceremoniously dumped out of the glass by a store worker then swiped at by Percy who thought I'd bought him a nice treat!

Hmmmm..... do fish hold grudges??? :D

Sushi? Have you learned her real secret cat name? My Gypsy is actually Little Lady Gub-Gub. Have not yet learned what Mickey's true name is. After seven years with him he still does not trust humans. Can't blame him.

After some coaxing, it was revealed that her name is "MitsuHara" if I spell it correctly. Apparently the dog's name is "DumDum", but that came from the cat. :wah:

I have a new kitty, I got him in July of this year when he was 3-4 months old. He's all black except for a little patch of white on his belly, and quite the rascal! I don't think he ever runs out of energy! His name is Scout, but my sister calls him Babooshka (and told the whole family that's what his name was). My friends say he needs a playmate, but it's expensive enough to have just the one...what does everyone here think?

Also, he's the cleanest, prettiest kitty, but he has a little stinky problem in the behind! It's pretty nasty and I don't know what to do about it! I never had a cat like this. My mom said it might be his food, but I have tried several different kinds. Any suggestions? :-3

Hard to say what you mean by "stinky problem in the behind" if he looks swollen or walks oddly at all he may need a vet to express (squeeze) the anal sacs of excess fluid. Another sign is the rubbing of his behind against rugs or furniture. Good luck.

sounds like it may be his food-go to petco and ask them-they will recommend something-a specific brand of food that may work better than what he is on. Some cats just don't tolerate reg brand cat food and need like a vet diet type thing till they get older.

No he doesn't have any problems (swollen, rubbing, etc.), he just stinks in that area more than other cats I've had in the past. When I first got him he had been neutered so he was shaved around that area so I thought it was because of that, but after it grew back he still smells. Ick! :(

My son has a pup that is a year old now. This dog annoys the heck out of me. Thing is, she wins my heart every time I see her with the cats. The cats love her, she loves them. They go to her, she washes them, they cuddle up and go to sleep.

I've got to admit to you all, i feel a bit of a fraud coming on this thread as i don't have a cat.

I do have a dog, she's a 6 year old Lhasa Apsho called Raspberry (long story!)

I do however have a problem with "wabbit" she is so finicky with her food, she only ever eats fresh food, i cook her chicken, lamb, pork etc, she's not allowed beef as she has an intollerance to it, £700 IT COST THE INSURANCE CO TO ESTABLISH THAT ONE!!

The thing is, i can't always gauge what to cook for the little *** er..princess..

Any ideas as to what i can do to change her eating habits would be greatly apreciated.

I love the name Lestat for a black tom. :) Most people who have... um.. met Percy are certain his name is really Percyfur which "coincidentally" rhymes with Lucif... er... you get the idea. :D Hmmm... I wonder which name Anne Rice would pick?

Hiya Wren! I don't remember seeing you in the intro threads, but welcome anyway!

BTW...your avatar totally rocks! Go Samantha!:D

I, like Anastrophe, have always had a kitty in my life. Gentle companion, and fastidious pets that they are, I consider them ideal.

Here's my current kitty:

Neo..not after the Matrix, but just because it sounds cool to call it out loud at midnight!

Nice resurrection of an old post guys, I am a newbie to the cat world and boy have I missed out. We adopted a kitten last November, my youngest was suffering separation anxiety with the divorce and her sis moving out. Well dispite enduring 4 months of severe allergic reactions (interestingly now attacks only come about once a week) I love the little guy as does everyone who comes to my house. He is a mutt, nothing exotic, mostly white with grey tabby patches. Has the prepetual M over his brow and a black and pink nose, and a smudge on his chin. He loves my dog, he loves the ex's dog who comes to visit every now and then (yah we BB sit it) and he loves everyone who comes over. My daughter named him Ringo. We have had many a person threaten to kidnap our little fellow but they have to make it past, the daughter, dog and myself hehehe I love cats. Doggs too.

Hey Minks! Here's a piece of "kitty trivia" for you. That "M" is a sign of the tabby breed and legend has it that when the baby Jesus was first born, he cried a lot and his mother couldn't comfort him, so she got a tabby kitten and put it in the cradle in the manger with him and, surprise! He stopped crying!

In gratitude for that, she blessed the tabby breed to always carry her initial on their heads as a sign of honor....

"M" for Madonna! :D

Hi! Don't post much but just had to add my cats to this thread. I have a three yr. old Maine Coon named Abigail. She tells me when it's time to get up and feed her by knocking everything off my bedside table!

Then, there's Sariebell! She's a British Shorthair - silver-shaded white. What a lovely young lady she is! I've always wanted a British Shorthair. They're the type of cat used as the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland. She has a big round face with huge puffball cheeks, round eyes, and looks like she's smiling all the time and keeping a secret. Lovely.

I'm waiting to become the cat servant of another British Shorthair kitten at the end of July. It's a boy and I'm not sure about his name yet. He's a cream colored tabby and heaven help him because he's the only boy in our family except for my husband. Our yellow lab is even a girl. I'm thinking about calling him Doodlebug after my son, Malcolm John, because that's the nickname we had for him when he was a baby. Otherwise, the name I wanted to use is JACK after Jack McFarland in Will and Grace. I had a little shelter-adoptee (orange tabby) I named Jack, but he didn't recover very well after being neutered and died two weeks after the adoption. I cried and cried.

Yep, I'm a cat servant and love my life more because of it.:-6
