Whats in your paint

Post by minks »

Ok I don't quite know where to put this post, in my job I get the opportunity to do a lot of research.

I thought it would be worth while to post some facts on paint and the hazardous chemicals in your regular paint.

Emerald Green, Cobalt Violet, contains Arsenic....

Arsenic can cause nerve, lung and heart damage.

True Naples Yellow, contains Antimony....

Antimony causes lung disease and stomace ulcers

All Cadmium Pigments contain Cadmium....

Cadmium is extremely toxic and can cause acute pulmonary edema, it is a carcinogen (lung and prostrate cancer links), can cause emphysema, bone disease, anemia, teeth discoloration, loss of smell

Zink Yellow, Strontium Yellow, Chrome Yellow, contain Chromium

Chromium highly toxic, can cause liver, kidney and bone marrow damage. Chromium was the base chemical Erin Brokavitch battled over. Oddly chromium is also useful for dibetes, and weight loss.

Cobalt Violet and Green and Yellow, Cerulean BLue all contain Cobalt....

Cobalt is a carcinogen. Linked to heart, thyroid and kidney damage.

Falk White, Lead White, Creminitz white, Mixed white, all contain lead

Lead causes organ damage and stops the body from producing red blood cells.

Manganese Blue and Violet, Burnt and Raw Umber, Mars Brown, all contain Manganese

Manganese can cause brain damage with Parkinsons like symptoms and can damage lungs and kidneys.

Vermillian, Cadmium Vermillion Red, contain Mercury

Mercury causes damage to nervous, digestive and respiratory systems. And can damage kidneys.

Now of course these are the extremes, what is important to remember is your are at the largest risk when using spray paint or working with these products over long periods of time.

Wear a face mask when painting, an ounce of prevention is worth it. Just those simple white filter style ones greatly reduce health risks.

I was told by my oncolgist to STOP working in my chosen profession. I loved my work. Too much MeCl2, Benzene, Toluene, PCB's, DDT etc. Did it cause my cancer - probably not - but the risks were too great in my mind.
