Even though this is a joke thread, it' true that there is more obesity in the US than other countries. I'm not obese in any sense of the word. But US citizens are lots bigger than other people. Men too.

Yes, the French get government paid days off work, and the British too. French have more though. And Sweden has lots of time off. No wonder we are so stressed out here. :-5

Yup, eight days a year - unless you're self-employed of course.

As usual, the Government don't actually pay you themselves, that would never do, they make the employers do it for them.

Currently your employer can stipulate that bank holidays be included in your annual leave, however I believe that is changing soon but as I no longer employ anyone I don't keep up to date any more!!

I would be interested to hear what annual leave/holidays people in other countries get. We have a legal minimum of 20 days. There are also 8 bank holidays which many people get on top of that.

What about the US?

I can provide some evidence from another site:-

1) If you stack my vacation time, floating holidays and sick leave, I have potentially one month off a year. A guy I work with who's been here for 20 years gets some seven weeks vacation, tons of sick leave, etc., so as you work, you do gain a lot more time off.

2) My experiences are good as well. I have 5 weeks off, 3 personal days and 5 holiday...course I have been at this for 23 years.

3) As noted, the 7 National Holidays are mandated only for the public sector, (government jobs). 6 are generally accepted standard holidays for full time private sector employees, (the exception is Martin Luther King Junior's birthday which is rarely recognized as the 7th holiday in the private sector outside of banks).

"Vacation", "sick time" and "PTO" (paid time off), are not legislated in the United States private sector in any way shape or form. "Most places" does not apply to many hourly workers. "Full time" is generally defined as greater than 35 hours per week, anything less generally does not qualify for any paid time off benefits...including sick time.

These are anecdotes from American posters, I have no empirical evidence either way.

So it seems that the US has no statutory leave entitlement in the private sector!

That seems a bit harsh to a Brit who has had plenty of holiday whilst employed. Being self-employed is a completely different matter and I remember well the years of having no proper break except for one occasion when we went away for 4 days - bloomin' hard to keep going all year with nothing to look forward to.
