Bear Attack

Post by Pheasy »

This happened at a local state park. It was reported on our news the morning - the reporter said he was a very smart boy to play dead and survive the experience. Pity he was not a little SMARTER and had listened to his scout leader and not sneaked food into his tent! :-5

Now the bear will have to be killed!!!

That boy is very very very lucky. Playing Dead is not always a sure fire way to live unfortunately.

And while on the topic of Bears in the wilderness here are a few other things I have learned from living in Bear country (yes they come into our city and we have had many visit this year especially)

Bear Spray/Pepper Spray canisters empty in 8 seconds, are only affective if you can hit a bear in the face, with most of the spray.

Bears have an insanely acute sense of smell, coolers are barely a deterant. Best to store your food in a bag hanging from a tree when roughing it. Store it downwind of your tent and make sure it is at least 50 feet away from you, where ever you choose to sleep.

Never cook or eat in your tent the scent of food lingers on the tent, and your sleeping gear.

Cook downwind from your tent, if you cook strong foods like bacon it's smart to not sleep in that set of clothing you cooked in if at all possible.

Tips on hiking in bear country see chapter 2 (when I get around to it hehehe)

yep you got it glitter.

Here we have a few options bears are tagged and watched for repeat offenses, if they repeat they are tranquilized then moved further away from the city. If they repeat again after removal or they kill a human... sadly they are exterminated. It's a sad sad thing.

Hey but on a good note here in our national park Banff national Park, we have the only 2 bear overpasses on the planet. These allow the bears to cross the Trans Canada Hiway safely. Pretty cool eh.

:mad:The policy in this area is, once a bear has attacked someone (whatever the reason) then it is considered to be dangerous! Even though the bear was following his natural instincts of finding food - in a world where we are taking over their habitat and making food less accessible.

Bear Attack

A number of years ago a friend of mine saw a 12 year old kid get his arm torn off by a bear in Northern Quebec. The kid was feeding the bear Oreo cookies while his parents took pictures. When he ran out of cookies the bear took the kids arm off that was holding the bag. My friend tried to warn them.
