Living in an area with many farms we have a great choice of farm stands and a weekly Farmer's Market.
We're on the edge of Amish country and enjoy the many types of organically grown fruit and vegetables they produce.
At this time of the year it's melons, strawberries, mangos and grapes which predominate in the fruit department with corn, tomatoes, squash and various types of chiles and peppers on the vegetable stands.
In our own vegetable garden we have lemon grass and curry leaf in addition to the more usual offerings as my wife being from the Far East likes to cook oriental dishes using home-grown produce.

Fantastic! Farms score every time, especially the cider farms! When I stayed in oregon, I actually saw a pear farm up for sale, and though I know nothing about farm maintenance or whatever or pears (except that they taste nice) I actually seriously considered buying it to make a complete change from the job I was doing!

Oh the joy!! You said it!! Growing up in the Great Sacramento Valley,
the things we had! I could sit down and eat a meal of tomatoes and corn
on the cob!!
We have abundant farmer's markets here, I was just thinking though
that with our late rains, good maters might hafta wait 'till end of June
or Early July. And our cherry crop was messed up due to splitting.
People who have only ever had something out of a grocery store have no
idea what the flavor of a REAL tomato or a REAL peach is!
YUM!

They are all over the place here in California, and it's the only way to buy good fresh fruits and veges. South East Asian immigrants have done a great job with growing huge strawberries here in the Sacramento area. And the growing season is a long one, given us the opportunity to have fresh strawberries much of the year.

Val,you hit the nail on the head....when i lived in Mass. and the sweet corn came in, we ate sweet corn and tomatoes for dinner.....nothing better!

o.k. you guys! Stop the Torture!! I live in Alaska and even in the best summer, we never have good fresh peaches, or even very good strawberries and a 'real' tomato is a thing of fantasy!

I am the farm stand. I found it quite amusing last year when every time I was out working in the garden the neighbors would stop and be especially neighborly, often pondering out loud how was I going to eat all those vegies. Of course I shared because i couldn't eat it all. I was out in the garden this morning and had 3 neighbors stop and ask what I was growing this year - just being neighborly - mind you.

I too am jealous, we have to travel to BC to enjoy the stands, we just call em fruit and veggie stands. Only good home grown anything we get in Alberta is cows and barley. Can't sell that at a stand.

Yes I remember the great fruit stands there in Florida, we loved them. When we used to "drive" to Florida in our car, the day starting to drive back home we loaded down the car trunk with fruits & vegies. All our suitcases had to go on the back seat of the car. We now travel by plane for the last 10 years, so we can't do that any more, and I miss the fresh fruits. (The stuff not eaten during the drive home was 2 days old by the time we got home. But it was still fresher then the store bought stuff back in New England!
