Oh, you are very active!

I walk alot-around the track during my prep period, at the gym I walk and ride 10 miles on the bike. Tai chi at night, and I run all day chasing students every which way.

Now there is a topic that is discussed in our house lately.

My work and life style over the past few years have left me with little time for exercise and I have put on about 15lbs. I carry it OK because I am 6'3, but it is time to get a grip and get my health back as a priority. It is mostly around my stomach.

I had my 10 year old daughter put together a training plan for me, which started Monday at 7 am when she woke me up for the both of us to go for a run.

My goal is to get back down to about 205lbs

Wish me luck, I will need it as I love all the wrong food.

I need to be a lot more active so seeing as you said sex don't count I would say I get no exercise.

I find things difficult due to arthritis and disc problems yet I know if I did do more exercise my weight would go down which in turn would help my health :-5

Not to any noticeable extent at all.

I spend all day sitting behind a desk where the heaviest thing I lift is a pencil.

I spend far too much time of here of an evening hitting the keys.

I eat far too much for the exercise I take.

At 1.82 meters I weigh in at 185 lbs but should be around 170 - 175 lbs.

So how do you start exercising from a very low fitness level?

Gym work bores me silly. I cannot run far enough to make any difference. What are the alternatives?

Me too.

The best way to start is simply go walking. Fresh air is (koff koff koff) good for you. If you can find some good walks locally (they needn't be long walks, 15-20 minutes each way is fine for a start.

Another idea would be get a dog or take a camera with you when you go out. A

Walking is the one thing I do manage - starting with a mile to work and a mile home each day plus going walkabout whenever I need to clear my head.

Trouble is it does not appear to improve my fitness levels.

Then you're not walking briskly enough.

How about cycling?

Good call :-)

I've not tried that in more years than I care to recall but it sounds like a plan.

It's become a hobby for me.

Not only do I enjoy riding but there's a sort of Zen to the maintenance as well.

But I still won't wear Speedos.

I love getting physical and spend a good proportion of my leisure (what there is of it!) doing active type things. On vacation I like to do long distance walks. I ski and swim and wander cross country. Do a bit of kickboxing and the occasional gym session of weights and pilates/yoga oh and aquarobics. Er, does dancing count?

Before my arthritis, you couldn't keep me still longer than 5 minutes. Now, I just force myself to move. I walk on my better days to keep my joints looser. I'd love to have an indoor heated pool nearby. :(

Bryn, I thought you looked to be in pretty good shape :D

You sure hustled down the street to save me from standing alone at Whitechapel station when the sun went down.

Oh, I should be more active but I walk everywhere, cycle where I'm going when the weather is nice and do a lot of lifting and moving making cabinetry so I'm staying pretty fit.
