What matters to you in your day to day life that politicians are too busy to do anything about?

this is funny you use the word politicians, like these people could change my day to day life. okay how bout them making my town ultrarich? where no matter what, everybody around me day in and day out had money to spend on what they deemed good for themselves. how bout this for starters?
And don't call it poverty.

I hope this applies, but try living in a City that is striving for 2010, and see what is really happening? We (as regular people) see our thoughts and ideas going down the toilet for housing, medical and other things. This is what politicians are doing. Trying to grab that big ring, and then, what afterwards?

The road system has always been crap in Vancouver. That's one thing that the Olympics will hopefully fix. That downtown east side is a freaking nightmare though. Young women with gaping holes in their necks and arms walking up and down the streets in a haze, shootings, stabbings, all the people thrown out of Riverview wandering the streets with or without their clothes on... an average day of life in hell.
The main concern doesn't seem to be how to help those people, it's where to push them to so that the condos they're building can retain their value.

It is such a really sad situation. I have not idea what they are really going to do to "fix it", general feeling is that it will get worse before they fix things. Pretty bad situation here, as most in some cities I suppose, but they are not going to host these Olympics.

That's kind of up to you and the rest of the voters to elect politicians to do what the electorate want them to do. If you feel that strongly about it why don't you do something about it? You do live in a free country why not support politicians that do want to improve things for ordinary people.

I hear you and I do vote. But....after the election those politicians seldom follow through with those promises they make during their campaigns. I am just so weary of the usual rheteric.
That said, the health, the education and the welfare of our children and the care of our elderly citizens should be a major priority. IMO

One of the problems we have here is that most the landowners of industrial properties are turning them commercial. Without industry we don't produce anything and, unless we produce something, we are only recycling limited income within the city and the residents have to travel to find employment. But who wants industrial businesses next to their homes?

The lack of a suitable public bus system in my town.
The lack of funding to animal shelters for proper humane euthanasia- they still use a gas chamber in the city pound.
The prolific continuity of backyard breeders contributing to the population of homeless animals.
The transient/homeless situation in my town. These people live under bushes and in arroyos out in the desert or even in town until the cops come through and flush them out. Where are they supposed to go? Many of them need psychiatric meds and without them can't hold a job if they could even get one.
The crappy education in our schools.

Is this Vancouver you speak of? You live in the same city as moonpie? My son goes to school there and he believes it's the safest place in the world, besides Singapore. Where are these bad sections of Vancouver? My son said they don't ever lock their doors, a trusting habit we stopped doing 30 years ago due to a rise in crime.

How do you suggest we do that in an environment of Party Politics where whoever we elect ot our local seat answers to the party whip and not to the people who elected them.
Where a vote for a local candidate is seen as a mandate for the national party to carry out a raft of dozens of policies most of which were not aired in the run up to the election but were burried in the small print of the manefesto. Even worse, it's seen as a mandate to carry through policies drempt up during their term of office that have never been near to a popular vote. Where central planks of the policies that weer aired in the election can be dropped due to "changing circumstance".
Then come the next election, when you have a chance to voice your disapproval, the other bunch of "politicians" are even worse.
In short, how does the electorate vote for politicians who do what they want when such animals do not exist and how do you support politicians who want to improve things for ordinary people when that breed became extinct generations back (if such a mythical animal ever existed).

Yes, I'm talking about Vancouver.
Downtown Eastside, is what the area is called. It runs along Hastings Street, center point is pigeon park at Hastings and Carrol, Main St. is pretty filthy too. The Wikipedia entry is slightly sanitized but has some description http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downtown_Eastside
I'd give you a ton of links based on a google search of "vancouver downtown eastside" but my internet connection is slower than dialup today so you can google it on your own :p

Actually, they aren't quite extinct, we've had an epiphany up here in civilisation. Since May we have actually had a government which is competent!!!
What makes it even more telling is that it's a minority government (which means that come the next election, the oppossing parties will highlight those items which they voted down as being due to the dishonesty of the present government).
These parties, as usual, are ignoring the voters. Unfortunately for them, our voters are developing long memories.

I still maintain that, by the very system we use, the electorate is effectively disenfranchised and can only act as a very coarse mechanism of selection and control.

One local politician, approached by the engineering society asking for support of a public safety project was queried "what can you do for me?"
Unfortunately, getting results from politicians usually involves having to make it personally rewarding for them to be involved.

I would agree. That is why I have always been in favour of proportional representation. We have it up here-and in Wales and it is beginning to tell. Voters are waking up to the fact their vote does actually count.

He's right there. Labour up here are terrified. They've been in a state of shock ever since. I would take bets on Gordon Brown losing his seat at the next general election as well as Alastair Darling.
