I feel Cheated !!!

So having been in the USA for 4 years now, I can definitely say that the two things I miss most are 'fish n chips' and custard.

Recently some friends sneaked over some Birds Custard for us. Trouble is it was not the old fashioned powder, just the 'add hot water' packs.

So, these packs have been sat looking at me for weeks, tempting me, talking to me even :wah:

Tonight I made a roast dinner and then thought right you little suckers I'm making you with apple pie. Well :yh_sick, I feel cheated, no more than cheated! How could they do this to me. That 'just add hot water' is disgusting. Thats it, my evening is ruined. :wah::wah:

Yes!! I agree Dubs. How can they even pretend thats custard.

I know my reaction may be a little over-the-top, but seriously when you have been craving custard as long as I have ..... it makes me want to hurt someone :wah::wah:

So ... it will take me about 2 hours to get to Newark Airport ..... then lets say about another 2 hours to 'con' someone out of there ticket to UK. Then about 8 hours into Heathrow ......

how far from Heathrow are you Dubsy?

Get cooking dude, I'm on my way ..... by the way I like apple pie with my 'real' custard. :-4

How do you make custard? What do you mean by this? Any custard I've eaten, not much since I've not liked any custard I've had, was this cold creamy vanilla banana tasting stuff. Is this close to the custard you all speak? Well I can see it on hot apple pie, but never had the opportunity to eat it this way.

btw all powdered and dehydrated foods taste a tad off unless you are talking about eating foods individually dehydrated, like fruits and veggies, meats, and cheeses. If trying to recombinate many dna, in say the form of a custard, your head needs to be examined :wah: that is, if you set out thinking you might have something close to the original. My advice for gloppy things would be to stick with things like cream of wheat.

Pheasy you mentioned fish & chips The best F&C I've ever had was from a California chain called H. Salt Esquire Fish & Chips. Even comes wrapped in newspaper. It is so good!! I don't know how it compares with F&C in the UK but man alive, if the UK's tastes anything close to H. Salt, then I envy you guys very much!

Can't you make custard from scratch that's like the British custard. Or do the Brits have some secret ingediant that's only available over there?

Interesting point. I will research, but I'm guessing its a guarded secret. Custard is a big, big seller in UK. :-6

600ml (1 pint) Milk

6-8 Egg yolks

50g (2 oz) Sugar

1-2 Vanilla pods

Split the vanilla pods lengthways scraping out the sticky seeds.

Bring the milk almost to the boil, remove from the heat and add the vanilla seeds and pod(s).

Allow to stand for 15 minutes to allow the vanilla to infuse the milk.

Place the egg yolks, sugar and in a bowl, beat until thick and creamy.

Remove the vanilla pod(s) from the milk and slowly beat into the egg mixture.

Place in a heavy based saucepan and cook over a low to medium heat (do not allow to boil) , stirring constantly, until the custard thickens. (If the custard becomes lumpy strain)

Serve hot or cold.

i was soo yummy :p

and fish and chips are the best, with mushy peas.

and Dub's I am driving down the M1 right now to your mum's house,

From the BBC :-

Ingredients

570ml/1 pint milk

55ml/2fl oz single cream

1 vanilla pod or ½ tsp vanilla extract

4 eggs, yolks only

30g/1oz caster sugar

2 level tsp cornflour

Method

1. Bring the milk, cream and vanilla pod to simmering point slowly over a low heat.

2. Remove the vanilla pod (wash the vanilla pod, dry and store in jar with caster sugar to make vanilla sugar).

3. Whisk the yolks, sugar and cornflour together in a bowl until well blended.

4. Pour the hot milk and cream on to the eggs and sugar, whisking all the time with a balloon whisk.

5. Return to the pan, (add vanilla extract if using) and over a low heat gently stir with a wooden spatula until thickened.

6. Pour the custard into a jug and serve at once.

7. To keep hot, stand the jug in a pan of hot water and cover the top with cling film to prevent skin forming.
