What Do You Think ..... ?

Post by Pheasy »

MiniMe had a music test last week. The test figures go towards his overall grade for 7th grade. He had to sing (solo) and know all the words to the USA National Anthem. I personally don't care about this, but I know some have a strong feelings about it. What do you think ?

Hmm. Well, I don't know that they should grade anyone on their singing ability or even make someone sing since that can be embarrassing for some kids but I think it's a good thing to know our anthem. If it stops there. If they said "You must BELIEVE in the national anthem!!" then I'd have a big issue with it. Just like I feel about the pledge- one should know it but I don't believe in forcing anyone to say it or subscribe to it.

I think though that they could have substituted this assignment with something a little more important (IMO) like, say teaching about the Underground Railroad or Scopes Monkey Trial for example, or some piece of American history that would be (again IMO) a little more important. But then that has nothing to do with music, so I'm just rambling here.

So how did MiniMe do on this assignment? Just out of curiosity, Pheasy, are you unimpressed because you're from the UK or does that matter?

I really love your new avatar!! :)

Thanks for your comments on my avatar - hubby took the picture in June this year and I forgot about it. I was looking through piccys and thought 'mmm that one does not show my grey hairs, wrinkles and stress lines' so I'll use it :wah::wah:

As far as Josh learning the anthem I don't really care. In a way I think its a good thing. I don't think they are as big on teaching the national anthem in the UK, which maybe they should. As far as singing solo, I am very surprised he did it! (and he got 88% on his grade for it) I expected him to refuse - he has very strong feelings about what is within his/teachers rights. :wah: Also he has a 'god awful' singing voice. :wah:

The National Anthem is a great song!:)

Yes I agree Wendy. Your national anthem is probably one of the nicest there are. The UK anthem is very depressing - IMO. The USA one is beautiful. Did you see the 3 year old singing it in my 'Too Cute' thread? :-6
