What's top on your childrens wish list this year?

My girls are 9 and 8 years and are having laptops each this year, such an expensive item, they wont be getting much else with it.

Hey Chezzy,

Hard to believe we are a little more than a month from Christmas. I'm not sure what to get any of my kids. I'd rather just give them one thing each that they really wanted, within reason, or some cash, and not do any shopping. I'm not much into the spirit for any of this right now.

I'd really like it if my kids shopped more for each other, independently, you know, put a little thought into what to get their siblings, even for me and their dad. They sometimes seem a bit selfish (my kids are old enough to know better). I figure we as the parents have ourselves to blame for that, and the media as well. Ho ho ho everyone.

Christmas is too commercial

Can anyone remember a time when Christmas wasn't about hammering the plastic or digging so deep into your bank account overdraft facility that you would still be trying to shovel your way out of debt for the next six months?

Personally I think that the whole commercial thing has gone way too far. Christmas used to be a time spent with family and friends. We'd of course exchange a few gifts but we would have put some thought into it and it was about giving someone something that you thought they would appreciate. These days Christmas is nothing more than a massive shopping exercise where stressed out shoppers tear up and down the high street laden with carrier bags full of pre-packaged and impersonal gift sets. The shelves of the high street retailers are packed with boxes of identical bath sets and useless overpriced gadgets.

It’s a kind of weird two-sided feeding frenzy with the high street shops on one side keen to unload all this junk and make as much profit as possible. On the other side we have hoards of manic shoppers eager to spend whatever is left in their bank account or credit card.

Dont even get me started on xmas food shopping :-5:-5:-5:-5

I used to feel that way but it would upset me too much, the pressure to be perfect so I changed my way of thinking. Now Christmas is what I make of it instead of what Hallmark and Kodak tell me it is. The commercialism is out there to be sure, but you don't have to be a part of it unless you choose to. You too can make your own kind of Christmas and leave all that other stuff in the wind. ;) It's much easier and much more enjoyable in my opinion. I know I have a far better time now. :)
