oh, basic cable costs minimum $35/month so it's more than 300. That only provides less than 20 channels and only one is free of advertisements every 10 or 15 minutes.

You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, set-top boxes, video or DVD recorders, computers or mobile phones to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV.
If you use a set-top box with a hi-fi system or another device that can only be used to produce sounds and can't display TV programmes, and you don't install or use any other TV receiving equipment, you don't need a TV Licence.
A colour TV Licence costs £135.50 and a black and white licence costs £45.50.
What if I only use a TV to watch videos/DVDs/as a monitor for my games console? Do I still need a licence?
You need to notify us in writing that this is the case and one of our Enforcement Officers may need to visit you to confirm that you do not need a licence.
Please write to us including your name, address and the reason you believe that you don't need a licence at:

BS98 1TL could this be your get out clause Jimbob???

This surprised me Jimbo so I looked it up.....this is from the TV licensing website...... I'm sure a lot of people don't know this.....
I haven't got a TV. I watch telly on my laptop.
It makes no difference how you watch telly - whether it's on your laptop, PC or mobile phone or through a digital box, DVD recorder or good old-fashioned TV set - if you use any device to receive television programmes as they're being shown on TV, the law requires you to be covered by a licence.

Wow, TV is free here. You can pay extra if you want to watch cable stuff, I get the package of $50 a month, so my husband can watch his football games. I don't watch it anyway, so I'm not paying more.

Oh dear they don't give up easily, the tv licence people
back in the 80s and 90s i didn't have a tv for ten years, and they wrote to me every month saying i needed one, sent people to check if i had a tv and even sent the detector van several times.
What i hate now is that even if you just buy a portable tv in woolworths they have to take your address to pass it to the tv licencing people, well I do now have a tv and a licence but since when has it been any concern of woolworths?

what other country do you have to have a licence costing nearly $300 just to watch tv ....or if you have a mobile phone or a pc
You do not need a TV licence just for owning a mobile 'phone or a PC.
You do need a licence if your mobile 'phone or your PC is capable of showing TV.
The licencing people cannot conceive of a house or flat that has no means of showing TV pictures.

When i lived in Belgium you had to have a licence for every radio you owned, ( no tv licence though.. i think) but if you ever bought a radio the shop wuld take your details so you had to buy another licence. If it was for a present you had to give the details of the person you were buying it for!
