I use a permanent but you still have to end up doing the roots every few months.
Maybe we should just welcome our greys with open arms

I was welcoming mine with open arms, but got a semi from Target & put that in.
Looks OK,supposed to wash out in 30 washes so I think that is good value.:-6

IP, I would suggest if this is your first time coloring that you try the semi-permanent or if you're unsure of what shade to get, try the kind that Mrs K suggested that washes out gradually in so many shampoos. Don't bother with those colored rinses like "Fanci-ful," they're a mess and mainly meant for the elderly crowd.
Some things off the top of my head....
Gray hair is often resistant to color to varying degrees, so even if you used a permanent color, the gray may still show a bit. If this is a problem, they make a product for this called "Gray Magic." Beauty suppliers carry it and can tell you how to use it.
Is your hair all one length or do you wear layers? Layered hair hides roots better than one length. I don't know how gray you may be but you want to avoid that look where there's a white stripe going down the middle of your head.
If your hair is permed or you blow dry/iron curl it often, it's more porous and may "grab" the color in the porous areas making it look darker. This is especially true about the ends.
If you use permanent or semi-permanent color, it will generally fade to about a shade lighter due to oxidation. This happens in the first few days.
Unless you want to totally change your natural hair color, aim for the same shade or one shade darker than your natural color. By the time it oxidizes the color should be just right.
You can always get your hair colored in the salon the first time, find out what they used on you and then do your retouches at home.

Hi IP.
Fortunately I dont have any grey hair yet but I do have streaks that are half way grown out, I wanted a change so I have been using wash in colours in chocolate brown and they are great. Im using Nikki Clarks exciting chocolate, its a bit pricier than the rest @ £7-99 but it comes with a honey and beeswax conditioner and it gives your hair a wonderful shine. As its fading out, the shines still there and the fade is quite slow.

I have welcomed my silver, not grey, with open arms. No coloring for me anymore.
I like the natural silver highlights in my brown hair. My hubby cuts my hair for me and I style it myself with a curling rod.

Barbara Walters said something like "you don't get older, you get blonder" :p that's my motto now too....:wah:
oh, Garnier Nutrisse (did I spell that right??
) is my favorite hair color, it has that oil you add to the bottle so it's not as stinky as some others are.

I do my own hair at home and have always had really good results. Was not paying too much attention this time and got something a little too dark which is darker than my natural color - so cannot wait for it to wash out. I did try going lighter the following weekend after the first goof up and the lighter color did not take at all, still the same dark brown. So I don't know if I did it too soon after the first try. Oh well, live and learn.......

Thanks guys for the advice, right now I use a wash out in 28 washes,I keep using it because it is soooooo close too my natural color it's unbeleivable! But sometimes a few wild strands of gray at the top are not complient, so I pull them out(that will teach them)
