Or is it just me?
A 10-year-old Florida girl faces felony weapons charges after bringing a small steak knife to school to cut up her lunch, according to a report on MyFOXOrlando.com.

Facing Felony charges is a bit over the top. Her parent should be the ones responsible for this they should know good and well what the rules are in school now for knifes, forks, and spoons not allowed.
They should have cut the food up for her and sent it that way. Hopefully they will come to their senses and drop these charges.

Knives, forks and spoons are not allowed? What do they expect the kids to eat with??

What - sharp pointy things? If a spoon is a potential dangerous weapon then chopsticks are the real thing.

Their fingers, perhaps? No, that's silly, fingers have nails and these could be a potential threat. In fact, maybe it's not such a good idea for kids to take lunch into school...imagine the damage an egg mayonnaise sandwich could do in the wrong hands

Off the subject, but who is Ron Paul? Is he a gay candidate for prez?
There's a Ron Paul poster in the window of an apartment building near here. I live in a largely gay neighborhood.
Maybe I'll vote for the guy...

So lets see here, primary school children are criminalized for bringing a knike into school to cut up there meat with?
I suppose this stems from the worries about older children bringing weapons (up to assault rifles :-2) into school. It sounds over the top alright, but with these stories you usually need to read a bit more into it, maybe she was frightening other children with the knife, or maybe its just a general rule that the school or local authorities have to demonstrate to even young children the dangers of things like sharp knives, or maybe it is just a stupid case, anyway, moving on.

I think you can discount the notion that she behaved badly with it - "Students sitting next to the girl at lunch say she didn't threaten anyone with the knife; she just used it to cut up her food."
The argument that US citizens should go armed is based on the deterrent effect of the proximity of lawful citizens who can intervene if criminality breaks loose. Perhaps we might extend that to insisting that all US children should carry steak knives when they're gathered in large numbers like at school. That way they can intervene en masse if one of their cohort takes it into her head to hurt someone.
I always openly carried a sheath knife on my belt at school from when I was 12 as did several of my class and nobody started fights. I claim this was the result of our rapid reaction capability.

I just think it's crazy to charge the kid with a federal felony. :-5
