the decline of life today ..why
I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on
frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond
words¦ When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of
elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise [disrespectful] and
impatient of restraint (Hesiod, 8th century BC).
"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for
authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place
of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their
households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They
contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties
at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.

Twas ever so. People lament the breakdown of marraige but nowadays people stay together because they want to not because they have no choice in the matter.
people think there is more child abuse but nowadays we don't turn a blind eye and pretend it doesn't happen.
People get bullied at school but at least nowadays it is less acceptable as a norm or a part of everyday life. When I was in 1st year at school I was beaten up by a fourth year-(for any americans or engish come to that I was 12/13 he was 16/17.) I still remember the headmaster asking me if I did anything to provoke the attack. Nowadays the little thug would be charged with assault but all he got was the tawse and told not to do it again and I lived in terror of meeting him and his mates until I changed schools. Bullying was commonplace and just accepted as the norm.
Now we have an older generation that behaved like this

I don't think young people today are that bad at all.
They express themselves in a different way to us but weren't we different to our parents and glad of it!
I think today's young people are encouraged to challenge and question authority more than we were and I for one am glad of it.
Most of the youngsters I have met have been polite, well spoken and interesting. Obviously some aren't but that's no different to my friends at that age.
I'm glad that society now sees bullying as unacceptable, I have no problem with young people's taste in music and clothes - ok I wouldn't listen to ir or wear it but then I'm too old for it anyway.
I am anti-drugs, anti-smoking, anti-violence but it is my responsibility to educate my child to behave in a way that I see fit. I know not everyone does that but on the whole, in the area I live most parents do a pretty good job and we are lucky to live here.

the decline of life today ..why
Babies are raised by strangers in day care centers.. so God knows what they are hearing. Once old enough to not need day care, they go home to a house where no one is home. Mom and dad both work, so father and mother figures no longer exist. In school they hear daily, how we are on the brink of destruction. Mass shootings fill the TV, radio and paper news headlines. Many of their neighbors, relatives and friends have been diagnosed with some kind of personality disorder, and are medicated. Illegal drugs are right outside the door, for the asking. Depression, suicide, and fear are household words. The pressure to be sexually active by 12 is a fact of life. Aids, herpes, and other stds are ravaging their friends. No one reads anymore, entertainment is playing on the computer. Entertainment is not jumping roap, or playing stickball.. its video games. Adolescent movies include physical torture, explicit sex scence, drugs, and hallucinations. Money is tight, no one laughs, making dinner is a chore. Everyone is tired, unhappy, bored, or angry.
Music lyrics are upsetting, filthy, filled with rage, and hostile. Role models, kill each other, torture animals, have aids, walk around almost nude, pierce their bodies, and curse all authority. College, dentists doctor visits and vacations are unaffordable in most homes. This is life for our young in a huge percentage of households, throughout our world. Yes, others have it worse. There are starving, sick and dying young people in many countries. But we continue to focus on improving technology, exploring space, planning wars,
marketing useless generic goods, and finding ways to line the pockets of corporations. Since our youth is our future, and their needs are ignored. Many feel unwanted, unloved, insecure, angry, frightened and bored. They get up everyday, harboring the feeling that we are on the eve of destruction.
As we all know there was a time when family was the nucleas of existence.
Literature, music, art, wholesome food, and mental health were priorities.
College was possible. Parents had the time to encourage, and cater to the young minds they brought into the world. Blue collar workers made a wage a family could live on. And life though often simple, held the promise of better things to come. Blue skies, fresh air, laughter, and love was the prescription for happiness, an optomistic attitude, and health. You know all this dear Jim, and you care enough to see. These are the realities that make you feel sad.

Ya know what's wrong with kids today? Their parents, that's what!
Kids aren't the only ones that live a virtual life. We go home from work, start supper(if we haven't picked it up in a bag on the way home), park ourselves on our favorite sites for a while to unwind by playing games or chatting virtually to folks around the world.
We don't care what our kids are listening to or watching, until it interrupts us.
where am I going with these ramblings?
no idea... i just haven't posted in one of jimbos threads lately so I was missing him...

Despite feeling pressured ourselves, I have often stated here that adults have a moral responsibility to uplift, mentor, and encourage youth. I have always been surrounded by young people in the places where I have worked.
As caustic as many of them can be... I try to lighten them up, by laughing at many of the behaviors I find to be down right ridiculous. In the beginning they laugh ME off.. just chalking me up to being an old fart. But in a short amount of time they always begin to have an interest in the things I say, short stories about the way things used to be, and when Im lucky affections form. They will then come to me for a word of encouragement, with a question, or with their tears. I havent had an easy life either, but growing up the way I did, working hard for everything, overcoming obstacles, has provided me with a wealth of life experiences that I can share. I learn things from them also. New perspectives, though often foreign to my way of thinking add to my cache of tools needed to deal with the next batch of young people who come along. It has been my experience that cutting to the chase, being honest, or apalled if called for, mixed in with lots of compassion and and open mind, can go a very long way, and work miracles.

I have to agree with this one.
Not all parents but a lot.
Some couldn't care less.
Some just don't have the time or energy to deal with being a parent.
I love spending time with kids they make me happy, they are so clever.
Mostly they just want to talk & have someone listen.I can do that:-4:-6

Here is a SEPTUAGENARIAN'S take on today's young people, and I will use my own grandchildren as an example. They now range in age from 5 to 25.
First, one must avoid generalities because it depends on where these young people live and under what socio economic conditions they were raised. GENERALLY SPEAKING, I see no difference in the basic intelligence level of todays young vs. past generations. I see a HUGE difference in SOCIAL SKILLS, courtesies, politeness, verbal & writing skills. I am not a sociologist, but suspect that this could be due to playing computer games excessively (less live interaction with peer group) and a general withdrawal from playground type activity. I see todays young people as having been more catered to by parents and creating dependency on their part for a longer period of time. THEY MAY MOVE OUT, BUT LOOK HOW MANY ARE COMING BACK. This group will be running the show after I have assumed room temperature. Will things be better or worse?? Only time will tell.

A lot of the bad language is down to TV as most films have it.Also if the parents swear, then the kids do and dont even realise that they are as it comes into their speech naturaly.
The decline in teenage behaviour came when they stopped National service. We started with the Teddy boys, with their own dress code and flick knives.Next came the mods and rockers,I was a mod. I had respect for the older generation, but they were alien and my peers were my main priority.Kids want to be different to their parents, and each generation brings out new names for what is basically groups with different dress codes.Drugs are a way of life now, they screw with your brain so this accounts for a lot of crime and anti social behaviour.
A child that is raised with parents who have time for them and live in a good area, stand a much better chance of getting on in life than one born in a bad area with a mum who has a steady stream of unsuitable boyfriends.
There are kids who have had a deprived childhood who have made it in life, and I take my hat off to them and their parents.
The one thing that worries me is in the past we had violent boy gangs. Now we have girl gangs as well, our girls seem to have changed so much.I am not sure if that is a good or a bad thing.

the decline of life today ..why
I'm gonna have to say I agree that our youth society is disinigrating, I'm only 23 years old and even I think so! Even when I was growing up I was taught to respect my elders, ESPECIALLY when I was at someone else's house! My boyfriend has a young, 11 year old daughter, and she is polite enough, but I see her friends that dress in mini skirts, wear more makeup then I do even when going out, and watching movies that heavily involve sexual influence. All these girls care about at this age is what they are wearing, boys, what other girls are LESS popular....ofcourse I experienced this as well, but I was about 13-14, these girls are only 10-11!!!

something that really surprised me this year was my niece and nephew over xmas.
it snowed like crazy. they got 8 inches, then i showed up and it was 16 (HA!):wah: anyway....
lots of great snow, and they never left the house. not once. hell, i went out and made a snow angel and a snow lepper. my Brother-in-law went out and HEshoveled the driveway. WTF??!!?
if my dad had to go out and shovel when i was coming up, my sis and i were DEAD. we weren't gonna be able to sit for a week.
they didn't even go out to play. i couldn't believe it.
Video games, texting, and iPods. that's it. that's al they want to do.
now i'm not saying i was the most active bugger coming up, but DANG! i wanted to go outside every once in a while. and there was no way i was gonna be able to stay inside on a nice day either.
My sister was the same way, "Go out and Play" was Mom's favorite phrase. well that and "your room is a pig stye"
and my sister is the exact opposite. "if they don't want to, they don't have to" WHAT???

Death is looming over our heads like a churning black cloud.
Its ominous presence hovering just out of reach yet near enough to smell its stench.
Grim impending death reeking of foul, taunting us with its jagged grin.

the decline of life today ..why
I substitute teach at the local HS and have found that in a class of 25 kids 1 or 2 are not nice kids. In a day of 6 classes - there are only 1 or 2 classes that have these kids in them. If it is more than that it is usually because the others are just being followers. For example: I asked a boy why he wasn't doing his work........he told me he was waiting until he was 16 - dropout age - and then he was going to get rich dealing drugs. He got high fives from 3 other "buddies".

I personally don't think kids are worse today ... if anything I think they are getting smarter overall.
I'm amazed to see three-years-olds using computers ... when I was in school I remember the teachers would stare blankly at the VCR and ask for assistance from the class. It's true, some skills have gotten better, some have gotten worse. But that's really because the things that are required for survival have changed in themselves.
If and when it does occur that an entire generation does go downhill, we would have to ask ourselves who is responsible. Why is it assumed they are failing us? Is it that we have failed the next generation? I honestly can see why a kid would not want to engage themselves in the system we've got going on now. In the direction we're are going (as the U.S.) we're creating a huge mess, and even bigger debt for kids to pay off.

Hi guys, my comment short and sweet, the sign of the times unfortunately, world wide problem:-1
