Report a Post function

Post by koan »

It has been mentioned in another thread that reporting a post can be frustrating as there is currently no reply issued in response.

The moderators do have a discussion underway on how to provide better feedback without making every decision a public announcement.

Speaking just for myself, I'd also like to mention that it makes moderation much more difficult when a post is reported then the offended member immediately launches a retaliatory attack. When this happens, the original offending post is dealt with directly by the offended member and the moderators often find themselves looking at two members who have equally crossed the lines of courtesy. Summary - it doesn't matter "who started it" if both parties end up insulting each other in turn. Sometimes it becomes difficult to infract one person and not the other.

Perhaps a thread on how to improve our post reporting option would result in greater happiness. Perhaps not. It's worth a try.

Nomad had an idea.

How about if the person that was offended contacts the offender and the two of them discuss options on the best way to settle the issue in private with mutual respect without bothering anyone else at all.

I'm picturing cyber shot guns. :-3

Two members enter, one member leaves.

Seems like that ought to work, Nomad but this is the place where we all come when we have nothing else to do and... you know what they say about idle minds.

I don't want to make people feel like they shouldn't use the report a post function.

Sure, jokes can be made about problem resolution skills but we actually want people to use the report button when something upsets them... instead of responding in anger with a post that perpetuates the problem.

Some days it's harder to ignore things that are upsetting.

Some days we get flooded with reports by different members and some days we get flooded with reports from a single member, then we go for weeks with no posts reported. Some days there are no mods online when reports start flooding in and other days we have a lot of mods there to discuss and make decisions. It's not like a 1-800 service where there is always an operator available to take your call and you have to settle for leaving a message.

For rj, one of the reasons I use invisible mode is that if people see me in a thread with a dispute they figure I should do something right away. I don't "do things", I, and the other moderators, discuss what should be done first and that can take some time.

Well, how about this.

I'll be the intermediate moderator... if someone pisses me off I'll slap them and the thread into lock down. I'll pick anyone I think is contributing to the **** fest and poof, they are locked down too.

Once the regular moderators show up, you can decide to let them loose until I decide they are being idiots again.

If nothing else it will give everyone a whole new appreciation for the benevolence of the moderating staff :sneaky:
Who are they to protest me? Who are they? Unless they've been me and been there and know what the hell they're yelling about!

Reading between the lines of that thread there's also an undercurrent relating to PM, as opposed to open thread, abuse.

So, to anyone who gets an abusive PM.

Next to the Reply button on every PM is a Forward button. Choose the moderator you feel happiest to talk to about it, forward the offensive PM to the moderator and I'm sure something will be done about it.

You need to say when you do it whether you mind the content being quoted in the moderator discussion areas or whether you want the content to be seen only by the moderator you send it to. You need to be very sure that you don't change the text or quote from it selectively too.

Say what you want to happen as a result of your complaint (this applies to reported posts as well) - most moderators aren't mind-readers.

I can think of several threads in moderator space where a moderator has recused over a conflict of interest. One reason for that has in some cases been prior involvement in the thread. Certainly it would immediately apply if the moderator were the author of a reported post. Moderators seek each other's advice quite regularly.

What if you have never been offended by a PM or post. Does that mean you are a boring non entity? Or does it mean you should be more controversial? Now I am not asking about being reported (I am fairly certain I have), I'm just wondering why nobody feels the need to insult me to the point of needing to report? Or have you tried? Well if you have, keep at it, I think I might like it..:D
