Desert Island revisited

Post by theia »

Okay, you are alone on a desert island...

Choose 8 pieces of music, one book (excluding the Bible or another religious book of your choice, and the works of Shakespeare, which will already be there.) And one luxury item, which must be inanimate and of no practical use.

Can't make my choice now because I'm off to bed in about 5 minutes.

Define pieces...song, album, concerto etc.

The bible will be there or just Shakespeare ? This seems unclear.

If the bible is there which version ?

Is the Koran there ?

Is everything in English ?

Why is the Bible and Shakespeare there but not Tolstoy or Michener ?

What do the two of them have in common ?

Is it some kind of cult island ?

How did we end up on this island and where is it ?

Latitude and longitude ?

Are there ship or boat remnants ?

What is the nearest speaking language ?

Is there any hope of rescue ?

What types of wildlife inhabiting this island should be considered ?

Types of vegetation ?

Okay music wise

Chopin's preludes

Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin

Eine Kleine Nachtmusic

Beethoven's 9th Symphony

Any of Bach, any

Abbey Road by the Beatles

Kind of Blue Miles Davis

Planxty's After the Break Album

The book I would take would probably be the Rodger Penrose one called "The Road to Reality" simply because its an up to date summation of physics, logic, and mathematics that is so over my head, and is packed with so many things that someone on a desert Island could spend their time working out, I would probably actually start understanding it after a couple of years, and then I feel a lot cleverer than I do right now. So once I was rescued I would have learned something with my time.

The one luxury item, its an inanimate object? Hmmmn, probably a telescope to look at the stars, as that would keep me occupied sometimes, and the stars would be nice on a desert island.

Galbally took Chopin's Preludes, I will take his Etudes and Nocturnes. :)

Vivialdi Four Seasons

Concertos for violin

Mozart-Sonatas

Rachmaninoff Concertos

Bach Two and Three Part Inventions

Fugues too with their extra goodies

Mendelssohn Songs Without Words

You said pieces of music, so the instruments have to go along with them, a nice baby grand piano and violin, a concetina or accordian, a recorder, and whatever else is handy.

Book-the Iliad.

One luxury item: If you won't give me the instruments, give me one for a luxury item. Music is not a luxury, it is a necessity of life. But for luxury, I'll take my kitty along for company.

I was thinking of this one sleepless night!

Life on Mars - David Bowie

Under Pressure - Queen and David Bowie

Rule the World - Take That

Barbers Adagio

Higland Cathedral played by the massed bands at the Edinburgh Tattoo

Into the West by Annie Lennox

Already There by Lonestar

Yellow by Coldplay

For a book I'd like the complete works of Tolkein and for a luxury my quilt and pillows.

Oh bugger, can I stay on the desert Island with CG, we can share the music and she can teach me to play the piano properly?? Oh go on, please!

Supplemental rations aren't allowed! So that's technically an excluded item.

I think it should be a FG desert island so we can all hear each other's music and play with chonsi's cat.

Demitri Shostakovich, Babi Yar

Gustav Mahler, Kindertotenlieder

Anton Webern, Quartet opus 22

Arnold Schoenberg, Verklärte Nacht

David Fanshawe, African Sanctus

Karlheinz Stockhausen, Licht

Alban Berg, Wozzeck

and I've another Stockhausen that I've played quite a lot since I was at school, with Microphonie I on one side and Microphonie II on the other, and I'd not like to be without it so that has to come as well.

I'd better have The Golden Bough as a practical guide to my behaviour, and a permanently-in-tune violin with unbreakable strings and a bow that won't wear out for a luxury.

Been thinking about this at work and I still can't make up my mind on the music or the book...

but, like Immy, I would take my pillow and duvet (it's a set, so counts as one item) for my luxury.
