my email isn't working, HELP!

since 5 pm tonight i have been unable to send email. i am not sure if i am able to receive, but it is unusual that i haven't received mail since that time. (any of my friends here who have my address, please send me a test mail)...i called my DSL provider, and we determined it was not at their end.however, i am getting an error report that server is not connected, it IS. i use incredimail, and never had a problem before. i reinstalled it. i rebooted. i don't know what else to do, but this is very upsetting since my pc is my lifeline around the planet... any ideas? Hawke? anyone? :-1

three possible causes:

1. if you have a firewall (you should!), either hardware or software, it may be misbehaving. firewalls are often embedded in the DSL router, so you may have to power-cycle that.

2. if you're running antivirus software (you should!), it may have changed your email settings. many AV programs will change your settings if they believe you have a virus, to prevent it from propogating. you'll need to check specifics within that software for the fix.

3. if you send and receive email through a third-party provider (rather than using your DSL provider's email services), then it could mean that your DSL provider has started blocking access to mailservers other than their own. you'll need to check with them on that. if that is the case, you'll need to contact your email provider to find out if they have an alternative port through which you can send your mail. (if the sending is blocked, it can often block receiving as well).

also, what is the SMTP server that you are connecting to? i can test it remotely and see if your DSL provider is fudging the truth as to whether the server's up.

thankyou Paul, i did pm you. and i AM receiving mails now.but cannot send. i disabled the firewall, no help. will check the AV.

Paul, thankyou for your generous help, nothing seems to be working and i need to take a break because I AM GETTING A SCREAMING HEADACHE! AGGHHH!!!:-5 .......and Peg, thanks, i did get your email, i like how you can say anything when i can't write back! LOL ...if i am not seen for a few days it's because i had to take this baby into the shop, OR i shot it. it's so strange i can get mail but not send it.

I'm telling you LC, I would have sent a long, long email if I weren't so tired LOL. It really doesn't sound like a problem where it needs to go to the shop. I'd call tech support at the ISP and have them go through the configuration settings with you.

dear god, do NOT take it into the shop! there are few things more dangerous than taking your computer in to the shop to be 'fixed'.

visit the site i sent you the link to. it walks you through, step by step, screenshots for every step.

they are a former competitor of mine, whom i've loathed for nigh on a decade now - but their support pages for email software are second to none, i'll give them that.

had to tell you this Paul...being the relentless person that i am, i just called bellsouth back and got an entirely different story, this one said there is an outgoing problem and they've been getting complaints all night! so MAYBE JUST MAYBE this one knew what they were talking about!

based on the error message you sent me, it won't make any difference. the server name listed is invalid, so you won't be able to log in.

Hope you got your problem all solved. I had to laugh and my initial reaction was

There is your problem Bell South ahahahaha Sorry I have to deal with them all the time and the story is never the same when I contact them.
