Away From Her

Nomad's Rating :

Gordon Pinsent is Grant, a retired professor who must watch his beautiful wife, Fiona (Julie Christie) of forty-four years deteriorate in the clutches of Alzheimers, before finally agreeing to put her into a care home. His pain is just beginning, however, as once there, she rarely remembers him and he must watch as she forms a relationship with another man, whom she meets there. Grant continues to visit her steadily despite finding her less responsive to him. Still, his unselfish love for her seems to know no bounds. The film is slow and easy yet poignant in its ability to capture a heartache that comes from a lifetime of love.

Sounds like a poignant love story. I'd like to see it. Alhzeimers can happen to any family. This disease can so be so cruel.

sounds like what we're dealing with right now

My In-Laws, 90 yrs old, we're needing to move them from assisted living to individual quarters for their individual needs, and remain under the same roof.

They've been married 67 years.

its very stressful - sad actually. I don't think I could see that Movie right now.

Yes it is a great movie that tells it like it is with the disease.

We have a program we sponsor at our local chapter called "Memories In The Making". Artist go into facilities and help the patients create memories through art. Usually they have a project they focus on and try to paint, draw or schetch what they see. They produce amazing piece of art that we have framed and auction off once a year at a Gala. We honor the artist, their families and the reward are many for all who participate. Here is one example of a piece in this years gala.

It is a sad disease but there is joy in their memories if they can share them it is wonderful. These are just 2 of hundreds of art pieces we have collected over the years. All have been created by patients with ALZHEIMER'S. I am alway just blown away by their detail and skill. Most pictures they create are from past memories.

A very fine, moving film.

It has earned Julie Christie a Best Actress Golden Globe award , a Best Actress Screen Actors Guild award, and an Academy Award nomination in the same category.

I'm pleased for Julie's success, but I'm disappointed that Gordon Pinsent's wonderful performance hasn't been acknowledged with any nominations .

What's interesting is that the movie was directed and written by Sarah Polley, at the grand old age of 28.

I only just discovered Sarah after watching The Secret Life Of Words. I fell in love with here from the get go.

28 ? She has more than 50 movie credits to her name.

Shes a natural.
