Smoking is Legal..........this is just another tax con by our government to rake in more cash, they say will be ploughed back into our NHS but by the time admin costs and the costs of the card and regulators of said card have been taken out that wont be much, no doubt it will be taxed as well lol.........I dont smoke but I disagree with our government taking every opportunity that can to fleese us out of more money...

What is the reason given for having to buy a license to smoke?:-3 I agree with Guppy license to drink alchohol would make more sense:D I mean why, if you are an adult do you need a license? Or is it just for younger people who may have to prove their age? but then all you need to is show some id for that, passport, driving license etc. soo i have to agree with Chezzie as well.

I've just read an article on this and the suggestion is that the application forms will be made so complex that people won't want the hassle of applying for a licence and will give up smoking. Of course, the costs to the government will not only be the huge loss of revenue from the tax we pay on tobacco but the additional administration costs for implementing and policing the licences.

Nor mine, Kaz!!

And I agree about the feeling like some sort of criminal comment. The only times I feel comfortable about my "despicable" habit are when I'm sat outside the house on my own having a ciggie or when I'm with a group of smokers at work (and before anyone starts complaining that we shouldn't smoke at work, we don't. The hospital trust forbids smoking in the grounds and so we all walk out to the main road).

Not very many, I imagine, because, as you'll know, it's a fair walk to reach the main road. Some patients smoke just outside the hospital building.

I heard that a hospital in the next county had reintroduced smoking areas for patients and staff.

Yes it is a long walk! I thought the hospital had zero tolerance on smoking within the grounds, does that only apply to you staff then?

Me too, Kaz. It's a stressful enough time without adding the pressure of nicotine withdrawal.

If they do introduce these cards, smoking will just go underground...You will get people selling them from importing from abroad etc...I cant see most of the british smokers agreeing to this can you?

Well said - and can you imagine trying to police it?

"Excuse me Sir, I notice you're smoking - can I see your licence papers please?"

If the government are serious about stopping smoking then implement a rising age limit on smokers - the limit goes up be one year every year. Those that can smoke now can continue to poison themselves but no one else can start.

Added advantage that government revenue only declines slowly :wah:

sorry guys, but I think it's a really good idea, anything that makes it harder for kids to start smoking in the first place is a good thing. I started at fifteen, instantly addicted, it took me twenty years to stop.

I also work for the nhs and surely anyone coming from a medical background has seen for themselves the damage that can be done by smoking and wouldn't really want to see the return of smoking areas...

No one in our offices smokes and the manager would never set anyone on who did smoke, it's disgusting

oh I agree, I dont want my children smoking either. However this will not be a deterant, like I said it will go underground, the kids who want to smoke will find a way, the same as they do now with alcohol and drugs..This is nonsense and a complete waste of resources and taxpayers money to even think about it.

End of the day, if people want to smoke and drink, what is the big deal. It is THEIR life, they paid the duty on them, since its like £5 a pack of 20, im sure most must have to be working these days to afford to smoke so they also pay NI and income tax.

They dont want you smoking, they dont want you drinking, they dont want you using your car, they dont want you watering your grass, they dont want your rubbish, they dont want you GETTING ANYTHING UNLESS THEY CAN TAX YOU ON IT!

oops I rambled sowwy:lips::-3:rolleyes:
