Who is ordained and who isn't?
What does it mean to be “ordained Is it something God does? Is it something people do to other people? Would we even bother with it if it wasn’t for the human legal factor? Can one be "ordained' without the action of organized religion?

Hey there Cool - and welcome..When my mother became upset - I wondered to myself..Why does this bother her...But you are right about "Does this give you the power to do God's work" - I guess I look at it as - I did this for a favor for my family, I have not used it but one other time - but I do write wedding vows and such for weddings...I was told that if I was ever in a situtaion where my life or my childs life was in danger to go ahead with a blessings and last rights..because we have just as much power as our church leaders when it comes to blessings..Unture? Maybe - but in who's eyes?

We have been saved, born again christians for almost 20 years, have been involved in many different ministries and now he is thinking about being "ordained" into the Church of God. He brought home this seven page "rule book" that you have to go through and then go in front of a "panel" so they can look you over and discuss your answers to their questions. He said himself "Am I ordained by their standards, not what God considers a 'servant'"? I just don't understand how "man" can say whether or not one is worthy to serve God. A piece of paper does not justify whether you can preach or teach or perform any of the gifts that God has given you.
It’s a real dilemma. He wants to serve but they won’t let him unless he fits their mold. They essentially say, “God ordains but we get to say who He ordainsâ€.

The church was established by the disciples of Christ. Jesus gave certain powers to the church through his disciples.
Ordination in most churches if preceeded by formal training. After one passes the formal training one can then approach the head of the church and in the case of the Anglican church that is the Bishop. The Bishop and a panel of Christians interview the person and after a lengthy discussion and then a meeting of the panel with the Bishop, based on the authority given to the Bishop the candidate is either accepted or rejected.
Ordination is part of the Apostolic accession. That is the power to ordain has been handed down through the centuries by the laying on of hands whose unbroken chain goes back to the Lord himself.

I actually don't know if Jesus ordained anyone himself. But he clearly gave his disciples the right to forgive or not forgive sins; to speak in His name and to run His church.
So my assumption is that the disciples began the practise of ordination under the directions that they were given by Jesus.

Who is ordained and who isn't?
There's a Pietist subset of Protestant Christianity which recognizes the priesthood of all believers (ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people). Certainly the Lutherans, Baptists and the Methodists. They base this on their interpretation of the bible. The rules of these churches may say, for example, that only a Minister authorized by the general assembly can conduct a communion service, but not because he's ordained and the congregation isn't - the rule is for the maintenence of good order.

You'll pardon my suggesting that I don't feel very fundamentalist, Ted. I was brought up with core beliefs, and the priesthood of all believers is fairly central to them. I'd say, myself, that a reliance on an unbroken Apostolic Succession is a tad more dogmatic by comparison with what I'd care to be. For one thing, it fairly guarantees that some churches will look down on others as less authentically Christian, not by practice (which is a reasonable test) but by historical accident.
British Methodism has no Bishops to be apostolic with. We're a variety of presbyterian assembly, in some ways - we do seem to be governed by old men!

The Lord ordained the 12 Apostles by the laying on of hands. When Judus killed himself he was replaced by Mathius by the same method - in that event by the Apostles who already HAD the priesthood, therefore had the authority from God to ordain. This is the way of ordination. A piece of Paper/diploma cannot be the authority, neither can months or years of religeous training. Only those who have the authority bestowed on them as above can ordain others. However ONLY those who use there priesthood in a proper manner have the power to act in Gods name. Fallen priests? Goodbye to their priesthood whatever they call themselves.

Mark 3:13-15 reads that Jesus ordained the twelve. We also know that the Apostles ordained Mathius to replace Judas.
This was the pattern for everything that was done in the church. God the Father ordained His Son (Hebrews 5:4,5), the Son ordained twelve apostles (Mark 3:14,15), and the apostles ordained other apostles (Acts 1:22), deacons (Acts 6:6), elders (Acts 14:23) and bishops.
The Bible doesn't clearly explain how these ordinations were always performed, however, from the few places we have recorded, the indications are that it was always done by the laying on of hands. This is the way Paul and Barnabas were set apart to be missionaries (Acts 13:3), and people were healed (Acts 9:12, 28:8). We saw that Joshua was set apart by the laying on of hands and we know that the apostles gave the Holy Ghost by the laying on of their hands.
As Jesus and the Apostles performed every important ordinance by the laying on of hands it is clearly evident that He would have ordained the Apostles as priests by the laying on of hands. This method of ordination was also very evident in the Old Testament also (Moses and Aaron)

As a born again Christian and practising Methodist I understand what you are saying, but in the absence of, for want of a better phrase, a singular God, is it not better to accept that unless certain standards and training are upheld, the church generally will just crumble into a miscellaneous mishmash of individuals with personal beliefs. From the highest representative in the country to the church verger, they are all men (with the exception of ordained women). Thus said, there surely has to be a body to try to set certain standards with which to adhere. Without proper training, I couldn't possibly become a preacher, although I did give a public testimonial to my faith down at the Tower of London shortly after my rebirth. Jesus himself said "Go, make deciples of all nations..." It is my firm belief that if we, as Christians, totally dedicate ourselves to professing Jesus Christ as Lord, in order to do the job properly as opposed to lay preaching, we HAVE to attain certain standards if we are to follow His ministry to our best ability. It may just be a diploma, but in conjunction with giving your all in the name of Jesus, much can be achieved. I wanted to preach the gospel, but it may well be that all God wants from me is to be a Christian of example. As they say, God has many vessels.

I personaly am convinced that a priest needs to be ordained as such by the laying on of hands by those who hold the priesthood. Those bestowing the priesthood need to have, themselves, been ordained likewise. I believe that all men (sorry but I mean men - as it was in christs time on earth and according to the early Church) IF worthy, and who have accepted Christ by faith, repented of sin and been baptised for the remmission of sins and recieved the Holy spirit by the laying on of hands - are qualified to be ordained to priesthood. That sealed on Earth is sealed in Heaven. It is also my belief that the Apostles were priests as part of their Apostlehip. Moses ordained Aaron as a High Priest. Jesus was our High Priest.
This being my own belief.

Please see my next on page 3 covering much of your remarks. Certainly study and training is important for the priesthood - my point is that this alone and the diploma is not in itself suficient to make a priest. Ordination in the proper manner by those with authority is required. That is the most important part in fact, after prayer and inspiration from the Holy Spirit given to the person who is doing the ordaining. No one with the priesthood in the early Church went to theological college. I believe Lay Preachers have just as much authority to preach as do full time ministers if they have been ordained. Again the scriptures tell us that a minister should do so without reward.
I am not against ANY Christian denomination and believe that God uses all denominations to do His work. By far most of the Body of Christ are called to be an example. That is a great way to influence others. However I personaly do not believe that ALL of the body of Christ are priests. Disciples yes.

It is my belief that the priesthood is passed on from those who have it to those who do not but are qualified to receive it ( I don,t mean just by going through theological college) This is the "Line of Authority" which goes back to Jesus Christ when he ordained the 12 Apostles. It does not mean only an Apostle can ordain someone to the priesthood. The authority to ordain is in the hands of anyone who has the priesthood. However, in reality it is normal practice for someone in higher authority to do this, ie a Bishop or High Priest. Much depends on the tradition of the particular denomination. The priesthood succession in my opinion has nothing to do with Roman Catholic, Methodist Conference etc. Heavenly Father calls priests. One cannot just assume the priesthood.

Like I have said in previous postings, I believe that those with authority to ordain are those whom have been ordained themselves by those with the authority. The authority ultimatly comes from our Heavenly Father. He created all things through His Priesthood Power! A measure of that awsome power He has deligated to Man to use on His behalf. I believe that all things which are sealed on Earth by this priesthood power are sealed in Heaven. Therein lies the validity.
Both the Old and the New Testiment have examples of the ordination of priesthood. Moses Ordained Aaron to the priesthood. Jesus ordained the 12 Apostles and the Bible shows that this passing on of priesthood power continued from Primitve Apostolic times. I believe that NO ONE inherits this authority. It has to be endowed. Name some individuals currently on earth who have this power? Well as I have said, all who are called to the priesthood and been ordained. Me for one. I am not about to name others. Thats not my place. These things I believe.

When flower power came along I stood for Human Rights, marched around for peace and freedom, had some nooky every night - we took it serious.

Who is ordained and who isn't?
spot wrote: You believe it but you have no idea who qualifies? Well, that's helpful for my search for salvation then, isn't it. I'm here asking who on earth carries the ordination of priesthood on their shoulders, and you know who they are, and you simply won't tell me who they are? How am I meant to find out if you won't tell me? Go to fraudsters who aren't ordained by God, but just claim to be, and allow them to deprive me of my possible place in Heaven?

I suspect you are trying to bait me here. I have repeated over and over in my postings who qualifies. Yes I do know who they are and if you re-read my previous postings you will see whom I believe qualifies. I am not going to mention ANY individual denomination if that is what you are probing for. I believe God uses all denominations in His plan of salvation. I'm sure some denominations have more truth that others but I am not here to name names. My intention in making these postings was simply to reply to the original question on the thread about Who is ordained and who isn,t. Those who certainly are NOT are those who take on the priesthood by their OWN authority. There is a big difference between priesthood and priestcraft. Anyway you do not need to be a priest for your salvation . And no one goes to Heaven on the back of a priest. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ and by no other means.

I was merely going to enquire, ldsguy, what sign of authenticity I can look for, from the outside, to distinguish between those who falsely claim ordination and those who actually have it. A finger pointed at a set of authentic ordinands would have helped me immensely.
What may I look for, in order to distinguish? Are the fruits of the Spirit sufficient, for example?

OK I feel you may genuinly be seeking for something here and not trying to force me into a corner. Of course I have my own ideas about where to find the priesthood of christ and where not to find it, but I won,t be offending anyone on here by naming names. However, I do not feel that this discussion which is becoming a diolouge just between us, is the right place to deal with this matter. I feel we should take this discussion off this site and should you want to pursue it further, I would be happy to do so on private email. Should you wish to do this please let me know your email address.
