Sifting Through the Ashes
I wanted to discuss a number of issues regarding this forum that we all know and love. Recent events (Jerry and Geronimo) have raised many questions for me - some I need to work out for myself.
I would like to discuss how to prevent this in the future , or at least minimize the damaged occurred. I really do think that, for about 4 days, FG was totally trashed. I still don’t know whether this was deliberate, or just some very ’strange’ people who knew no better. That we probably will never know. So rather than allow this trashing of the forum whilst problems are being ironed out. Is their changes to the forums rules that could assist moderators and prevent so much damage should this re-occur.
I am wondering if there could be a different set of rules for new people until they have proved themselves. We do already have this in place regarding hot linking.
A rule regarding excessive derailing would also IMO be useful. As Spot previously pointed out, some people spend a lot of time and effort preparing a well thought out thread - it really seems unfair to them to then have to watch it being derailed - and do any of us really want to read through 3 pages of trash before we can get back on track?
I would like this thread to be a positive one. Containing ideas for the forum and possible changes that we could put to Tombstone for consideration. I do not want this to become a mud slinging session. I will request that it be closed should this happen.

Well, I don't agree with you that it was totally trashed. FG is too big
for that. It was a minor annoyance, which, if ignored, goes away.
The way to do it with threads is just to keep doggedly posting on
topic and ignore them if you have to. Either just in your mind or
actually putting them on ignore. Easy-peasy.
It's my experience that things like this come around every once
in a while, no biggie. A mere blip in the RAdio Detection and ARranging.

I think it's one of those "slippery slope" issues.
I also don't think that treating newbies differently with any extra rules is in tune with the ForumGarden friendly atmosphere. It's already hard to avoid people getting jumped on when they post with "attitude" before they have a lot of posts under their belt, extra rules would make it intimidating.
When I asked "Who are Jerry and Geronimo?" I actually meant it. I saw references to them all over the place saying they were being disruptive but hadn't actually come across them anywhere else on the board. In part because I haven't been online as much as usual. Not to say they weren't being legitimately annoying, just that it's not that hard to ignore people... intentionally or not.

I guess it depends how you use FG. I pretty much check most threads, not just certain forums. And to keep encountering 'trash' within so many threads and wondering how many of these posts you have to read, before getting back to a decent post was pretty trashy.
I have never put anyone on ignore before, but I image that it could make a thread even more confusing, because you are reading responses to something you didn't know existed, leaving you wondering about the responses. Was it to someone ignored or relevant to the thread.

I think Kathy did the right thing when she created her thread. She was giving them a chance to sort themselves out. But should a member have to do this? It did appear almost that the moderators had their hands tied. I just figured that maybe it was due to lack of rules on derailment.
Sifting Through the Ashes
I think you've got a valid point Pheasy. I did find myself thinking at one point whether it was worth logging on to FG 'cos all the stuff I like to read was rather dominated by the crud.
My FG time can be quite short sometimes so I don't want to wade through loads of 'he said' 'no she said' 'no you do it' 'no you' stuff before I can start to relax and have fun.
I have no ideas how to tackle it though, sorry. Unless you threaten the new members with Jimbo's jokes!!

Sifting Through the Ashes
Hi Pheasy:-4,
I hear what you're saying. I put up the "Jer & Ger" thread because I just couldn't take their silliness anymore. It seemed like every thread was being derailed by them, and it didn't stop. I just wanted them to chill and think about what they're doing.
I am going to try to think more before I post

I actually didnt come on FG for a couple of days because of those two. They as members were fine and if they kept their silly posts to their own thread I imagine would still be here. To read that a member wants to kill themself because of the other member their friends with and listen to "you pm box is full go empty" in nearly every thread you read got tiring. I havent tried the ignore function yet.
I think one of the problems with this pair was they didnt seem like new members and im still not sure if it was 2 seperate people or just one with two accounts. Bad typing to the extreme of me not being able to read any of it to perfectly typed english next minute.
Some of us members wernt sure if it was a past banned member, a present inactive member who isnt happy with FG or present members thinking it was fun to tear up the place. Once I got it into my head that it could be someone already on FG, I needed some space cos thats just sick.
I personally think that when you register for membership and you await your validation email, that email should include a rundown of the rules and who the mods are at FG. They should be warned that infractions will be dished out if the rules are not complied with.
I love the garden, iv'e made lots of great friends here, be a shame to let some dimwits spoil it.:-6:-6:-6
p.s. I would also like to thank Abbs and Spot for all they did regarding this shower of sh*tes:wah::)

Yes my reason for taking a break too. I had just about had enough. These 2 were doing it deliberately IMO - causing distrust within FG.
Geronimo seemed to switch between perfect typing skills to complete jibberish
I too would like to thank Abbey and Spot - I know they did put a lot of effort into trying to resolve this.

Yes it leaves you rethinking about what you want from a forum, and whether it is safe to post or trust people - which made me very upset - there are so many great people here :-4
I for one shall not be so welcoming to newbies in the future until they have proved themselves (so in reference to Koans comment - the damage is already done). I'm damn sure I won't be posting intro threads for people who pm me out of the blue.

Unfortunately for you Pheasy, alot of us thought Ger was a friend of yours, mind you didnt matter either way, would still of welcomed them and treated them the same no matter what.
As you had posted a Hey Geronimo thread, we thought it was a buddy.:wah:
Well personally im not changing the way I greet newbies, I will treat each one as if they are a new friend to play with and if I think their acting weird ill use that ignore button and see how that goes. I definately wont be letting some idiots spoil my internet time.:-6:-6

I for one shall not be so welcoming to newbies in the future until they have proved themselves (so in reference to Koans comment - the damage is already done). I'm damn sure I won't be posting intro threads for people who pm me out of the blue.
that's the way I've always been here....
:wah: but I'm the same way in person too. I need to feel people out before I decide if they are worthy of my attentions! :p :wah:

I just found this which I think a mod could pm a new member with and a little hello when they join, we have it set up automatically at my forum. We have a town crier who automatically creates a thread for each new member and a copy of the forum rules and who to contact if the need arises.

Sifting Through the Ashes
I think it works fine if members start threads asking the members to cool it off, as happened, and report a post of some kind with a note for use to look up the posters history of derailing threads.
It took a couple of days for communications to go back and forth and the members given a chance to back off. A couple of days isn't much to ask to make sure that people don't start getting banned because they're having a bad week.

I have never put anyone on ignore before, but I image that it could make a thread even more confusing, because you are reading responses to something you didn't know existed, leaving you wondering about the responses. Was it to someone ignored or relevant to the thread.
That's why I said "Or just in your mind" because then, if you do like
I do, you just speed through the posts that are "trash" and get to
the relevant ones. (To YOU)
I'm a bit curious as to you posting pm's... My take on it was that pm's
are just that... PRIVATE messages. And unless you get permission
from the one who sent them, you can't post them.
I realize that I have contributed to this thread, but really threads
like this just keep those two around and disrupting the Garden for
a longer period of time. They aren't even here any more and yet...
I guess I just don't think it was all that bad. True, it might have
been stopped earlier on, but still. For anyone not to post just
because they were here is weird, too. In those cases, post MORE.

I noticed the PM but decided it was ok as this is in Problems, Solutions and Feedback and the PM was regarding questions that the member wanted to ask a moderator or admin.
This thread is a good idea so we can go over why mods don't just infract and ban people as soon as there seems to be trouble.

Not wanting to bring up something that has been put to bed. I just wanted to put something straight - any questions people might have about my involvement in this whole sorry ordeal. Also to maybe discuss, possible ways of dealing with this in the future (I am sure this is not the last). I fear that this whole ordeal (which I basically can only describe as totally trashing FG for about 4 days) has caused more damaged than some know. I for one have many questions, most of which I will probably figure out myself. I can only say that this was a moderators/members nightmare. Hence I decided to pull myself right away from this before I said something I might regret - and I was close to doing just that!

I forwarded this to Spot so he could help with the initial question. Spot can confirm that this was sent to me by that person - not sure that I forwarded all of the conversation but most.

At which point I tried to pm back but her box was full. Hence my Hey Geronimo thread.
After that it pretty much what was on the forum, apart from a pm I received from Jerry asking what every ones problem was.
Is there anything that can be done to prevent this in the future.? I think that sensible suggestions would be beneficial to all concerned. Well done Kathy, you did the right thing. I think the moderators really were put in a very difficult position on this one.
Was this actually one person?
Where these 2 just trolls?
Were they just new to forums and needed time to work it all out?
Did they really have mental issues - and should be a least given a chance?
One of my suggestions to help moderate this sort of thing in the future, would be to have additional rules regarding derailing threads - we all derail (I know I’m guilty), but there should be limits on the acceptable amount. As Spot stated, some threads have taken a lot of thought and preparation, and is very unfair to wreck that persons work. Also nobody wants to read 3 pages of trash to get to anything worth reading.
Also could there be more control over IP addresses - although I am wondering how this would work? A moderator could find themselves spending all day moderating.
Okay, I've read it.
Essentially I think you're asking for a different set of rules for newbies to what happens to people who've been here for ages. A sort of probationary period during which the moderators are on a shorter fuse and are likely to throw your sorry ass off the site with less concern.
The background facts you want, anyway. They were two people, not one person. Neither of them had been to FG in the past. Nobody can second guess the mental state of anyone unless they're professionally qualified to do so and even then they get it wrong mostly.
The discussions between the moderators about the pair of them were extensive. In retrospect we may well have held off banning the accounts for too long, in which case I'm entirely to blame for that.
I don't think either of them behaved in a way I'd described as troll-like. My opinion is that forum trolls have friends who come and watch, and discuss what happened on their home site. Neither of those things happened in this case, and I was watching for both.
I'm dead set against moderating the content of threads, enforcing thread integrity by moderated editing or moderator intervention, the posters have to exert peer pressure to get what they want, we're not nannies and if we were we'd be criticised to high heaven every time we did it.
If you want to start the thread then by all means go ahead - I shifted Kathy's to the Compost Pile to get the home page shiny, that's all, not as a criticism of it being started. It was necessary at the time, it's still readable, it's an ugly thread by the time you reach the end of it. If you want to include what I've written here in your start-up then by all means use it.
Thanks for the feedback. Do you think my thread would serve its purpose, to get feedback and possible suggestions. Possibly also clear up some bad vibes.
If I post your comments too (which would be useful), I'll need say I checked with you first and then show your reply. Also what happened to the quotes in here, they are all weird.
It'll be a discussion of how ForumGarden's moderated. I've not seen one of those happen which didn't involve a small dissociated group of people trying to get their own back for imagined slights and insults. I've no problem with you starting it but there'll be the usual chorus from the usual suspects. The words "paying customers" will crop up despite the invariable statement that nobody gets any different treatment whether they buy supporting membership or whether they don't. The question of whether moderators should post in areas they moderate will crop up again. Threads like this aren't shareholders meetings but they get that tone part-way through. The moderators on FG are absolutely no different in any way to any other poster, they just have a few extra buttons with which to clean the place up in a timely fashion when it's needed. We invariably say in any thread if we make any adjustment of content, we invariably start a moderator thread to discuss what we did and why we did it on the very rare occasions when that happens. Except where it's shifting a picture that's messing up the home page borders, we don't start threads about that, that's a low grade more common change.
I fixed your quotes so they ought to appear properly now. I took out the colours, I didn't see what they were meant to be doing. If you want to have the thread you'd probably do best to just copy this whole PM as the OP and see where it takes you.
I am going to sleep on this one. And maybe post tomorrow night as I won't be back on properly until then. I don't want it to be a mud slinging session, and if you think this going to be difficult to prevent I would rather not bother. Can ,I as thread starter, state that I don't want a mud slinging session, and state that I will request that the thread be deleted if it becomes that?
Of course you can, but you might use the word "closed" rather than "deleted".[/QUOTE]

forum posting rule #1 (excepting spot, of course)ya never need a grammar package when posting to a forum, IMO. Writing a book, thesis, instructional material... perhaps. But posting to a thread should be written as if you are sitting back with the pants unsnapped and shooting the breeze with an old friend. grammar shouldn't count so long as you can get your point across.
Hell, I know folks with perfect grammar that I generally don't have a clue wtf they are trying to say... ya know the type I mean, spot?:D

I expressly forbid the use of any of my posts anywhere outside of FG (with the exception of the incredibly witty 'get a room already' )posted recently.

Indeed I do, I often see posts on my screen that fit your description in every respect.
