Earthquake in Great Britain??

I think I only heard a small dribble of this on the news this a.m. while I was getting ready for work. Was it announced that there was a "small" earthquake in GB today. If so, did any of our members feel it? I have no idea the area it affected or where the epi-center was. Anyone? Thanks.:-3

You needed to be near Lincolnshire to have wobbled. Small earthquake in England, not many dead. Actually I think someone was carted off to hospital with a fractured leg but that's the extent of the injuries.

Lincolnshire is a long long way from any centre of civilization.

Let's be honest, if the whole of Lincolnshire had sunk into the North Sea nobody would really have noticed. To describe the area as behind the times is to understate matters, it's still practically depopulated from the Enclosures Acts of the 18th Century.

I have relatives in Lincolnshire and I would definately notice if they were sunk in the North Sea. Lincolnshire is a lovely place Spot, you shouldnt be so judgemental

North East Wales was rocked by tremors this morning, as the UK was hit by its biggest earthquake in nearly 25 years.

Residents from across the Wrexham and Flintshire area felt the earthquake's tremors.

Despite fears for property it appears there has been relatively little damage to buildings in the region.

The earthquake, which had its epicentre in the Lincolnshire town of Market Rasen, registered a magnitude of 5.3, and was felt across England and Wales at around 1am.

Yep we felt it at 1am too, and it frightened the hell out of me, as I was just about to go to sleep. At first I thought something had happened downstairs until I realised that it was an earthquake. Only went on for 20 seconds or so mind you, but it was a surreal experience!

There's the answer then - everyone in England seems to have felt the Lincolnshire Earthquake except spot. And folk from Lincolnshire are wonderful human beings whose combined transfer to the bottom of the North Sea would be a profound tragedy to all who know them. How we're all going to cope with the Second Coming I'm not sure but there's going to be some serious gnashing of teeth, it strikes me.

Spot I have to take you to task. This 'minor' earthquake affected areas from Northumberland, through East Anglia and the Midlands, into Wales and down as far as London. It registered 5.2 on the Richter Scale, and lasted about 10 seconds. It struck the Nottingham area at 00.55 hrs. There was a very deep rumble/roar which lasted about 4 seconds, increasing rapidly in volume to very loud as the whole house shook quite violently north to south, the chairs we were sitting on vibrated and wobbled violently, and anything that could rattle, rattled crazily. Upstairs, the wardrobe doors were thrown open and the vent in the side of the skylight was forced open. Strangely, nothing fell off shelves, none of the pictures fell from the walls, and although the standard lamp shook violently, it did not topple over. These violent vibrations lasted another 4 or 5 seconds, and it seemed they would go on forever. I was just hoping they wouldn't get any worse. We were all in a state of shock, and I was still shaking 30 minutes later. I did not get to sleep for a long time after we finally got to bed.

That's a wonderful description Gill, I'm obviously wrong about the degree and extent to which it was felt. I've lived near Filton for too many years, it sounds exactly like the Concord test flights.

When our hearts had stopped racing, my hubby and son took torches outside and checked all the walls etc. They could see no damage. Then we all went systematically round the house and checked all pipes - gas and water, in case they'd been strained or fractured. Fortunately they appeared to be undamaged. I switched on News 24 and the earthquake was on 'Breaking News', and later on there was a warning for people to be aware that after-shocks may occur -- deep joy! So far we have not noticed any after-shocks.

Oh and by the way Spot, that was rather derogatory, the remarks you passed about Lincolnshire. Hopefully it was meant as an attempt at humour, but I have found that Lincolnshire is a very pleasant farming area, and the people are very friendly.

It woke my wife and daughter up in the middle of the night.

About 5.3 and centred on Lincoln - about sixty miles from home.

The last time I was in Lincolnshire the sun baked the parched ground, skulls lay in the fields, the reservoirs were dry, the pubs had all closed, tar was seeping from the roadbeds and the villagers stayed hiding in fear behind their curtains as we drove three abreast down their High Street. Nobody spoke to us. I'm not sure they'd ever seen one motor bike before, much less twenty.

SPOT are you deliberately trying to derail this thread ? Because the only possible connection with the topic is the word 'Lincolnshire'. If you say that talking about motorcycles being ridden three abreast through a village High Street is keeping to the topic, I'm not quite sure that the readers will be of the same view.

So far, you have been only very scathing about this very valuable county, and even if you only meant to be 'funny' it read as very sarcastic and derogatory, and in my opinion you are totally out of order.

I hardly think that an earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter Scale, and felt through at least six counties is a 'non-event', when thousands of houses are violently shaken - enough to cause the occupants to think that their homes were about to collapse, and a young man asleep in bed having a two feet square chunk of masonry fall through the ceiling, landing on him and breaking his pelvis, is anything to mock !

We've done this in the past Gill. I somehow manage to upset Carolly because she wilfully and bad-temperedly chooses to be upset, you come rushing to the rescue by attacking me pointlessly in another thread, the result's rather like the earthquake. People talk about it for a day but not a lot happened. Do you really want to go on indefinitely?

Planes fall out of the sky and kill everyone on board. That's an event. Non-lethal earthquakes are more minor topics of conversation. As is Lincolnshire's wow-factor.

As an afterthought, the pic's my email folder about earthquakes covering just the last two weeks. The power factors are in the Subject fields. 6.4, 6.7, 7.5, 6.8, 7.3, 6.7, 6.9 - adding one multiplies the earthquake power by a factor of ten. The UK earthquake was a tenth of a 5.7 and I've not even bothered mentioning those. It was a hundredth of a 6.7 and there were six at least that strong within the two week period. Believe me, what happened the other night was as non-news as you can get unless you're an aspiring cub reporter on a local radio station.

Your intitled to your opinion, we have had it now can we get back to talking about the earthquake and the poor people in Lincolnshire who have damaged homes to contend with after the earthquake.
