what is intellegence anyway

Post by Clodhopper »

Chuckle. Old Isaac definitely has a point. There are many different types of intelligence, as I understand the psychologists are beginning to realise. I'm supposed to be intelligent, but my maths ain't great, I could never be described as streetwise and my DIY skills have people like yourself in helpless convulsions on the ground.

When you really get down to it, we've drawn a line through human abilities, and said, rather arbitrarily, that "skills" are on one side and "intelligence" on the other.
The crowd: "Yes! We are all individuals!"

Lone voice: "I'm not."

I've always gotten the impression that really intelligent people have no common sense whatsoever. My sister is really smart but when it comes to doing such mundane things like taking out the recycables she gets into a tizzy about it. First the box cannot be loaded with the cans/bottles on the porch. She takes it box to the curb and then goes back inside for the recycables (it is about 35 ft back to the house), gets the recycables and brings them out to the box (I'm talking one box here) and puts them in carefully. Oh, and all recyclables should be clean, cause the trash man might faint? I used to help her with it but she was so stupid about it, I stopped. Just take the recycables and throw them in the box, put em on the curb and be done with it. How hard is that?

:wah::wah: i know what you mean. If my hubs hangs out any washing, instead of putting all the washing in to a basket i have for that very reason, then talking the basket out to hang the clothes, he just takes one or two items from the washer at a time therefore making quite a few journy's in and out of the garden:rolleyes:

ROTL - I know the laundry thing she does is just as bad. Brings all laundry up in basket, takes the clothes out & folds them and then instead of putting all the folded laundry back into the basket, she puts in the the folded towels and takes them upstairs to put in the closet, brings down the basket and repeats the entire process with shirts, pants, whatever. Makes about 4 trips up & down when all she has to do is put all the folded laundry back into the basket and make one trip.

I have to point out that she is single.

Its interesting init? Its my guess that most people are actually fairly intelligent, and then depending on their motivations or interests they will train themselves to ustilize a certain part of their innate abilities. Its amazing how if you apply yourself to something and practice it, whether it be mathematics, playing an instrument, leaning off all the names of premiership football players, or wallpapering, or chaging the head gasket on a DOHC internal combustion engine, or programming a computer to do something, normally most people will master it eventually if they put in enough effort. That said, some people are more naturally intelligent, or motivated, or hardworking, or wise, or wiley, or mentally tough, or mature than other people, some lucky people are all of these things, they tend to be very rich.

Its also interesting that for instance many men who wouldn't consider themselves that academically intelligent will be able to recite soccer statistics, or Star Trek trivia to an incredible degree of ability, which is the same kinda of skill you need to learn Latin, or British Military History, its just the application of your time and effort to one thing.

One of the reasons why IQ tests are not lists of questions, is that they are designed to assess your innate ability to reason, analyze, and interpret information coming into you, which is what applied intelligence is, but its still a very hard thing to define and interpret properly.
