Female aviators, history and future!

Post by valerie »

On this day in 1928: Aviator Amelia Earhart became the first woman to

fly across the Atlantic Ocean as she completed a flight from

Newfoundland to Wales in about 21 hours.

On this day in 1983: Astronaut Sally Ride became America's first woman

in space as she and four colleagues lifted off aboard the space shuttle

Challenger.

The Air Force has named the first female pilot to its' Thunderbirds aerial

demonstration team.

Capt. Nicole Malachowski, 30, will join the unit in November at Nellis

Air Force Base. She recently finished a four month assignment flying

with Operation Iraqi Freedom. Trained to fly the F-15E fighter, she is

currently assigned to Royal Air Force Base Lakenheath in England.

When she joins the Thunderbirds, she will fly the F-16 Falcon.
