Did This Bus Driver Go too Far?

And this IMO, is why teachers/parents/anyone responsible for children are loosing control. I do believe that children should be able to express themselves, and be seen as a valuable voice to be heard. However, they have to know that they are still learning, and rules are there for a reason, not just there to annoy them.

Did This Bus Driver Go too Far?

I'm afraid that too many youngsters 'know their rights', they conveniently forget that others have 'rights' as well. They have never heard of the word 'respect', let alone 'respect for elders'. A lot of them earnestly believe that rules and regulations are installed to inconvenience and annoy them, and the thought never enters their heads that rules and regulations are installed for their safety, and the safety of others around them.

I used to drive a private taxi, taking 'special needs' children to and from special schools. There was always an 'escort' in the taxi so the driver would not be distracted whilst driving, but even so sometimes a child would 'kick off' in the car and potentially cause a problem. On these occassions, I would pull in to the side of the road as soon as it was safe to do so. The child could not get out of the car because I had put the 'child locks' on, and I would remain stationary till the child calmed down. On one occassion a boy sitting in the front passenger seat (there were two other children in the back with the escort), brandished an open penknife in a threatening manner, so I quickly pulled in to the side of the road, grabbed his wrist and I was not gentle, which caused him to drop the knife on the floor. I quickly grabbed the knife while he was whining and rubbing his wrist, and tucked it in my door side pocket.

The language from both him and me was choice, and I told him that I was not one of the teachers so was not constrained by those rules of not touching children, and I'm afraid I threatened him with physical violence, telling him that the job did not pay me enough to suffer that sort of behaviour and it would not matter to me if I got the sack for beating seven bells out of him, because I was protecting myself from a threat with a knife! He shouted that he would report me to the police if I did anything like that, so I just told him that if that was the case then I would make it worthwhile the hassle of going to court and possibly prison -- I would make a good job of it, and he would have a good reason to report it to the police ! To say I was angry was an understatement ! I think he could see in my eyes that I was deadly serious, and at that point he gained a modicum of common sense and kept quiet for the rest of the journey to the school. Any other child I would have turned the car round and taken him straight home, but this lad hated being at school (because his bad behaviour was restricted) and did everything he could at school to get himself sent home ! When I got to the school, I collected the knife and escorted him straight into the staff area, and explained what had happened. I told them that I would be reporting to my boss, but that I personally would not be bringing that boy to school again - another driver (male) would probably take over.

They were horrified, and immediately sent him to the solitary 'quiet' room with a male member of staff, where he stayed all day. I did not take that boy again, or collect him, but I understand that he was in 'solitary' for two weeks, and as my boss couldn't find a male driver to take over the run, she contacted the authority to organise a different company to carry this boy. He was 14 years old at the time. He is about 21 years old now, and I have read in our local paper his various antics of assault, mugging, violence, burglary, car theft and malicious wounding. He is now in jail for the second time. I consider that I had a lucky escape in that taxi !

So I can quite understand the driver getting up-tight about unruly (distracting to the driver), and potentially violent behaviour of this child, whilst in her charge.

Drivers do not get 'danger' money, and they are responsible for the safety of everybody in the vehicle, including herself.

A good example of how to control the little %$#@ Gill :wah: :wah:

This bus driver now has received a blot on her record for this 'brats' behaviour. What was she supposed to do! The 'brat' was breaking rules, putting herself, and all on the bus with her, in danger. Had the bus driver allowed her to continue, or let her off the bus at an uscheduled stop, the driver would also have been in trouble. She was in a no win situation.

I didnt actually see the bus driver do anything. Obviously she was trying to prevent the girl from exiting the bus which was her responsibility. The kids are only allowed to exit at their sceduled stop.

And I do believe the girl is being charged. I saw an interview with the girl and her mother and its plain to see where the girl got her attitude from.

Of course the mother could find no fault in her daughters behavior.

Ive seen this so many times, a parent cant, wont hold their children accountable. Some kind of innate protect the cub kind of thing I suppose.

Bad parenting in my opinion.

I'm for the bus driver - she was only doing her job and protecting everybody else on the bus. I totally agree with everyone on this thread, the mother of the brat is a brat herself. It really galls me sometimes as a parent, that some kids can no wrong in their parent's eyes. I am always telling my kids, that "hey, some kids are just idiots cause their parents are idiots, but if you play by the rules and admit that you did something wrong everything will work out in the end". In other words, you've learned a lesson here. I'm just wondering if the stupid mother saw the video of herself?
