Yesterday the House sent a strong message to the United Nations.
A bill sponsored by Henry Hyde R-Ill was passed by 221-184 would reduce by 50% the $440 million contribution which the United States pays annually to them.
The reduction would be imposed if the U.N. fails to carry out a number of reforms demanded by America. Amongst these are:
1. The immediate suspension of member states guilty of crimes against humanity.
2. The withdrawl of dimlomatic immunity for those U.N. officials involved in the 'Oil for Food' scandal.
3. To ensure that Iran is ineligible to receive nuclear material from the I.A.E.A.
Rep Tom DeLay - R-Texas made the following statement:
'The United Nations has become an apologist for tyranny and terror in many parts of the world. Their ineptitude is breathtaking and, to quote just one example, the recent discovery of U.N.personnel involved in the rape of young African girls is an absolute disgrace.
History shows that when the U.N. is threatened with a reduction in their finances they very quickly begin to put their house in order'
A similar bill sponsored mainly by Democrats in the House failed by a similar margin. This bill would have made the Secrerary of State responsible for ensuring that the reforms were carried out rather than Congress. In the end, though, the stronger bill was passed and now goes to the Senate for consideration.
The fact that both parties in the House feel that the U.N is in urgent need of reform sends a powerful message and one which the U.N. is known to be taking seriously.

Good, it’s about time.
What happens if they learn to survive without U.S. dollars? If the UN ever reaches a state in which no single nation can hold it accountable we are in for trouble. If they can continue to function even when several countries pull out, they will become a power that no one will be able to recon with. Their present scandals will look like child’s play.
To me it is a failed experiment. If one nation’s funding can be used to sway it, it doesn’t represent all of its members. If it can operate without worrying about being held accountable, it will surely become corrupt as it has already demonstrated.

This is what disturbs me. It takes money, not a sense of morality to keep them in line. *sigh* How very typical.

Bullet's trial was a farce. Can I get an AMEN?????
