Time to die Mr Bond?

Post by capt_buzzard »

And now they want to dump James Bond. After 21 Bond films they wanna dump it.Die Another Day,grossed $430m,the biggest earner in Bond history.

But as Sony takes over MGM and tries to make James Bond a clean-cut, Spider-man-style, action-hero-with-a-conscience(and maybe also a pacifist), social worker and vegetarian while they're at it, the heirs of his first producer fight to keep him snobbish, (stiff upper lip British),insufferable,wise-cracking,gun-slinging,perma-shagging macho machine. It's not the most edifying dispute ever mounted between the forces of tradition and progress, but when there'e such a huge box-office at stake, neither side is giving in without a fight.

In the meantime, you can feel a small twinge for James Bond himself, as he sits in M's oak-panelled anteroom while the warring factions wrestle over his identity, waiting to be sent into battle again, long past his life as a fictional character of the British Fifties, long past his sell-by-date and, poor old sod, long past his bedtime.
